The ABCs of Life: S
When you serve with an open heart, you find that life becomes richer, relationships deepen, and you walk with a sense of fulfillment that no amount of personal success can bring.
“As we lose ourselves in the service of others, we discover our own lives and our own happiness.” — Dieter F. Uchtdorf
Dear Michelle,
I read a quote the other day that said, "The purpose of life is to be happy." My initial reaction was, "That's not right." Then I thought a bit more about it and realized it was true. I realized that I am happiest when doing something for someone else or making them smile for some reason.
Today's word is Service.
One of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself is the gift of service to others. However, service isn't just about doing for others, it's about how it makes YOU feel.Service takes many forms. It might be as simple as a kind word to a stranger, lending a listening ear to a friend, or offering your skills to someone in need. Sometimes, it’s helping an elderly neighbor with groceries or mentoring someone who is struggling. Other times, service means standing up for what is right, even when it’s difficult.
Throughout my life, I’ve found that the moments I cherish most are the ones where I was able to help someone, expecting nothing in return. When I worked in real estate, service wasn’t just about selling homes, it was about guiding people through one of the biggest decisions of their lives with honesty and integrity. I strived to make them feel protected during the biggest financial decision of their life. In my personal life, service has shown up in being there for family, supporting friends, and even sharing experiences and lessons learned through my writing.
A blog post I wrote recently reminded me of how meaningful it is to let people know how they have positively impacted your life. Many years after sixth grade, I decided to write a letter to my teacher, Mrs. Kartevold, to thank her for the kindness she showed me during one of the hardest times of my life. To my surprise, she wrote back, telling me she remembered me well and expressing her gratitude for my note. A couple of years later, her daughter reached out to let me know her mother had passed away, and that my letter had meant so much to her that she shared it with her family. That simple act of reaching out not only brought my teacher joy but also came back to me in a way I never expected. It reminded me of the power of kindness, the importance of gratitude, and how even small gestures can have a lasting impact. It brought me great joy to know I made her feel valued.
Service doesn’t have to be grand or public. It usually isn't. It’s often the quiet unseen acts of kindness that matter the most. A simple smile, a note of encouragement, or the willingness to listen can change someone’s day, and sometimes their life.
When you serve with an open heart, you find that life becomes richer, relationships deepen, and you walk with a sense of fulfillment that no amount of personal success can bring.Michelle, as you continue to grow and find your path, I encourage you to find new ways to make service a part of your journey. Look for ways to lift others, use your gifts for good, and be a light in someone’s life. The world needs people who serve with kindness, compassion, and love, and I know you have all of that within you.
Proverbs 11:25 – “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”
This is a lovely reminder that service blesses both the giver and the receiver.
With love,
