Memories of Halcyon: A Love Letter to My Childhood Home

''HALCYON Definition

A period of time in the past, that was happy and peaceful.

I’d like to tell a story about my HALCYON days. My parents bought this property five months before I was born. So I lived here all my life until I went off to college. Then soon after that, I married, but did not move too far.''

My early recollections are of being outside all the time playing in the spring, summer, and fall, and sledding in the winter time. We didn’t have air-conditioning so we played outside all day. And we were very creative when playing outside.  We made tree forts on the ground, inside the pine trees. We had a playhouse that my Grandfather and my Dad and my Uncle built when I was five years old that still stands on the property today.

But we were always outside. I can remember one summer I had a cast on my leg for most of the summer which made the heat even that much more unbearable.  My Dad bought one of those blowup pools, a very small blowup pool,  so that my brother and sister could run through that pool and I could sit or stand and try to get some relief from the summer heat.''

''Did I mention that we were always outside playing?  Mom would pack us a picnic lunch most days. We had plenty of shade trees.  And  we played outside until dark catching lightning bugs.  Later on when we grew older and had our own families, we were known for our very competitive wiffle ball games. And Sunday dinners.

Dad shopped, and Mom cooked every Sunday for our families. It became challenging when our children had games on Sundays. But Mom and Dad would cook Sunday dinner even when our children started to go off to college.

And holiday dinners. Mom and Dad did not like to delegate so all of our holiday dinners were here at Halcyon. I can remember when our older son went off to college nine hours away from home and his youngest cousin at that time age 4, couldn’t understand why he wouldn’t be coming home every Sunday for Sunday dinner.

And there were walks along the streams. One spring, I remember my then boyfriend now husband and I walking through the woods and we carved our initials on a certain tree. I think that I could find that tree today, but it would be very challenging for my knees!

Eating dinner outside on the picnic table was common and because we were blessed with large families on both my mother’s  side and my father’s side, there were family reunions.''

''I had a June wedding which made for beautiful outdoor photos.  I still remember that day, walking up the flagstone walk to the limousine that would take us to the church. My Dad and I both looked at each other and cried, knowing that our lives were changing that day."

The letter above was written by one of the homeowners about her childhood home.

Margaret when I was growing up, I was also always outside.  We had a local park and the neighborhood kids would go there everyday and we would have pick-up baseball, football, and Basketball games.  No need for anyone to organize them, we just got together and picked side.  Kids today are really missing out.  Also as me and my siblings grew up, every Sunday afternoon we would gather together at my parents house for a late lunch and playing cards.  My mom would do all the cook, and my dad would supervise everything.  ☺️

I agree George Souto - same with me growing up. I forgot about the City Park and Rec I used to go to until I read your comment.

Kids are missing out on so much.

Hello Miss Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 reading this reminds me of days long gone. Kids today, at least where I live, rarely play outside. Most are inside with the "devices".  I see kids as young as 3 with devices.

When I was young, we played outside all the time.

Lovely letter and great memories shared by the homeowner about their childhood home.

What a great remembrance and story to share Margaret. Having 7 acres to play on certainly expanded your capabilities. We were outside as kids a lot, but our stomping grounds were the dead end we were on with a brook at the end of it to explore. Jeff

Good morning,  Jeff Masich-Scottsdale AZ Associate Broker,MBA,GRI

An end street with a brook for exploration sounds like a good area for kids.

Margaret, that person had an entirely different experience that I had!  Only one home from birth to college?  We moved often through my 8th grade years, and for a period of time our home moved with us from one trailer park to another as my dad's construction job kept us on the move as one job finished and another started.  Start in Texas and run the coastline to Maryland and we lived in all states at least once with the exception of Mississippi and Georgia :)

Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 - that is a beautiful letter of the simpler life. It is very relatable and resonates with me and my childhood life experiences. Plus, I was married on June 26. My mother did not cry, but my dad did. He was in a car wreck the night before the wedding and had to get a rental. My bridesmaid dresses didn't fit in the rental car, so he made multiple trips to deliver the girls. In Chicago, not many people had autos, and the girls couldn't take the bus.

Thank you. The letter brought back fun memories.

Patricia Feager: That is a wedding to remember. There was a car accident the night before, a rental car too small to fit your wedding party, and many trips to transport each of the bridesmaids. I'm so glad my seller's letter brought back good memories.

Wow that's an amazing homeowner story Margaret!  Living there their whole life - that doesn't happen often. And still going there from time to time.  As a kid I do remember being outside all the time - even in the winter and it was cold in Duluth MN.  We loved playing outside, doing all the things kids did back in those days! And forts.....oh we had so many forts as we there was a forest behind us......fun, fun FUN!

Margaret- loved the letter. I too had one home until after college. My cousins, brother and neighborhood friends played outside until we had to go in. Every Sunday was family lunch.

Good evening Margaret,

Loved your love letter to your home. I lived n my home until I went away to college and we played outside all day long (my sister, brother and I). We dammed up the creek, played in the trees, built forts and slept in them at night. Your post brought back a flood of memories!

Hello Margaret - I feel fortunate.  While I knew of a previous home, my mom still lives in the home where I grew up since the age of three years old.  She and my dad bought a brand-new home in at-the-time-distant suburb that like life itself has experienced many changes.   Each home and resident has quite a few stories to share.   Thank you for this post which prompts quite a few recollections.

I love this post, Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400
It sounds like an idyllic childhood. As young children, my brother and I were always outside playing with the neighbor kids. I remember sometimes I would stay too long at my friend's house up the street and be scared to go home in the dark. 😨
