Tuesday’s Thoughts…Choices
How many times have you heard someone say “I didn’t have a choice.”
All you have to do is listen to the criminal in a crime show…I didn’t have a choice!
We hear it from our children, our peers, friends…heck we’ve all said it.
However, if you believe in free will, then we all have choices. To be sure, often the choices presented to us are not the ones we would want.
Your child comes home with a note from the principal and has to spend the remainder of the week in detention. He and another child got into a small fight. Both children were at fault and both were punished.
You speak to your child and listen to their story. Often what you will hear is But mom, I didn’t have a choice.
This is a teaching moment. It’s important to teach our children that we have free will and we always have choices.
Yes, the choice to walk away is not easy for any child or person. You want them to know they can stand up for themselves when necessary, but they need to learn that fighting isn’t always the answer.
Daily we are presented with decisions we must make…some as simple as “Do I really want that piece of chocolate cake” to “Do I want to continue working where I am?”
What we want our children to learn is that we have the power to choose BUT with our choices come consequences.
If we’re lucky, some of the decisions we are called to make allow us time to reflect…to mull it over in our heads or with our close ones.
And, there are situations when we are not afforded the luxury of time to think.
Each time we are confronted with a choice or decision to make, we learn something. If we’re smart, we’ll reflect on the consequences of our choices. Are we pleased with the outcome?
If not, what can we do differently? Is there something we can change?
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
Neil Peart
Too often in life, something happens and we blame other people for us not being happy or satisfied or fulfilled. So the point is, we all have choices, and we make the choice to accept people or situations or to not accept situations.
Tom Brady
There are three constants in life... change, choice and principles.
Stephen Covey
