Are You Doing Palm Reading?????????

By
Industry Observer 0506509

Today I had an opportunity to meet a lady from Flower Mound and start up a conversation. I was craving a Bailey's Cream/Kahlua with a fresh cup of hot coffee. As luck would have it, I met a lady who sat two stools down from me and we had a three-hour long conversation about the history of Flower Mound. This is what was so surprising, and I'd love to know from you if you have heard about this and are they doing palm recognition with credit cards in your area?

What the lady told me; was so bizarre I had to look it up and she was telling me the truth about a recent experience she had in Dallas. All she needed was her palm and a credit card, shop, then leave the store. I have not had this experience, but then again, I shop locally. Here is exactly what I learned today from the Dallas Express: Amazon One Palm Payment Coming to Local Stores - Dallas Express

"Tired of whipping out a credit card when it’s time to pay for groceries? Soon enough, you will be able to pay for your items with just a swipe of your palm. The checkout technology, called Amazon One, is being added to all 16 North Texas Whole Foods locations in the coming weeks.

Over 150 Whole Foods and Amazon Go locations already have palm payments. In Austin, some Whole Foods locations started integrating the Amazon One system in April.

Those interested in Amazon One palm payments must first visit an in-store kiosk. The machine will scan whichever palm you prefer, or both, and keeps your unique palm print in the Amazon database."

Is this what's happening in your area? I do not shop with Amazon and only on few occasions shop at Whole Foods. The lady told me she travels to Boston frequently with her husband to visit relatives, and that is what's happening in Boston too. Lew Corcoran do you know anything about this or has anyone else experienced palm recognition + Credit Card payments? How about you, Dorie Dillard Austin TX? Is this what's happening in Austin? Could this be the new way to buy property and close on transactions without a Title Company or an Attorney? Will there be a new dating app using palms + credit cards for desperate people who want relationships? (NO! I am not into the dating scene). Finally, is AI spinning out of control? Candice A. Donofrio you read palms, have you heard about this? To anyone - What are your thoughts?

P.S. Thanks, Candice for correcting me: "I understand palm reading."

Hello Patricia - admittedly I can't imagine a three-hour conversation with a stranger or given much thought about palm reading.  I guess that says something about me and I'm okay with that.  Happy Wednesday.

Good morning, Patricia. I have had so much trouble with Amazon in terms of fraud, I just refuse to deal with them on-line or shop at Whole Foods. I don't have any problems with pulling out my credit card and swiping or tapping it.

Nina Hollander, Broker - interesting! I never had an Amazon account, and I have no desire to get one. I can't imagine how distressing it was for you to experience fraud with your Amazon account. That must have been very upsetting.

I'm the same, no problem with using my credit card. I just don't want palm swiping to become mandatory.

I never heard of this, but just read the link and have to say this is A big NO from me!

First of all, being "tired" of pulling out the credit card? Really? Oh my gosh, it's so exhausting to have to open  up a wallet and remove a card. Gosh, I'm tired just thinking about it. (Sarcasm intended!)

I think this is a step towards a cash-less society which I am not a fan of. Imagine if a business turns to all palm-reading and the power goes out? Or someone hacks the system and assigns "palms" to different people? Or you want to change the credit card you use with your palm - how is that going to work? What about people who refuse to use charge cards? (I've got one in my family.) What are they going to do?

In my opinion, I think we should be using cash. It might not be as convenient but it's safer and works when the power goes out.

Kat Palmiotti - exactly! I will never forget the Texas February Freeze when the power went out and I had no power because my house is electric. A week without power with temperatures freezing because it impacted the grid was a nightmare! Or what about the recent power outages in places like Ashville and other parts of North Carolina during the hurricanes, or the fires in California. To be suck in a cashless society without alternatives in inclement weather would be horrible and you could be in a life and death situation. I shudder to think about it coming to fruition.

I remember how hard it was for my mother when she became elderly. During her whole life all she used was cash and when the Currency Exchange required payments by bank checks, she was lost. She did not have a checking account, and because she grew up during the Great Depression, she did not trust banks either.

Also, just thinking about whose palm touched a screen before me and what that palm touched before me makes me sick to think about. As it is now, I hate having to use a finger to sign a digital screen.

Hi Patricia,
To answer your question, I have not heard of this, but I'm not surprised. As others have said, it's similar to a fingerprint that opens your phone or apps. I relate to what Kat Palmiotti said. I'm not a fan of moving to a completely cashless society. Other than the power aspect, I have nothing to hide regarding my purchases, but that doesn't mean I like the idea of EVERY single purchase I make being tracked.

Carol Williams - I feel the same way. It's too personal. I've been concerned about a cashless society for some time, and it just gets worse.

I rarely download an app. And I despise facial recognition on cell phones too.

Patricia this is the first that I am hearing about this.  I think being tired of pulling out a credit card is a good thing, then I would use it less ...... LOL

George Souto - I think consumers who support the credit cards of their choice should have choices.

I couldn't do it. But I understand others wouldn't mind for the same reason you mentioned.

Interesting Patricia.  I've never heard of this as a payment option. Sure we can use it to open ipad's etc but that's all I'm aware of.  The idea of a card less payment future seems strange.  But maybe that's what people used to think about using checks?  Remember writing those out everywhere?  I do.  It's been years since I've written out a check.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten - It pays to be aware of new technology and how it can or will change the way we live and/or do business. I still do have a check book and mail in some payments. What's most convenient for me is to pay by phone. After more contemplation, I can't but wonder if using the palm at the closing table would alleviate the potential for wire transfer fraud. And delaying the closing until after the money has cleared before the buyer gets the keys to the house???

It will be interesting. I just saw that Dorie Dillard Austin TX confirmed "Amazon One palm-paying technology at Whole Foods in Austin!"

Databases get hacked, and what is my digital palm but another piece of data that can be added to compile a "complete me" that is a total imposter?  I'll pass.  It's bad enough that my credit cards, SSN, DOB and other key data are out there, I'd prefer to keep my biometrics to myself.

I've grown accustomed to getting those letters "Our database has been breached and you're entitled to free credit monitoring"!  The other day I got a notification from Facebook that someone had accessed my account, which led me to the activity history.  Amazing how many different country attempts to access my account were present, and that's just one small sample.

Liz and Bill Spear - I get the same notices. I got succored into that "free credit monitoring, which morphed into a monthly charge. Their reports are not even up-to-date.

It's a No, thank you, from me. I canceled my Amazon account earlier this year, not that I ever used it much. While I see the convenience, and fraud prevention on the one hand, on the other hand (or palm, ha!), it's too much personal information sharing for me. This news is on the heels of Amazon no longer giving people the option to keep their conversations with Alexa private. Again, no thank you!

Andrea Bedard - I never signed up for an Amazon account and have no plans to start now. From watching the video that Dorie Dillard Austin TX provided (which was very educational), I'm guessing young people will think it's great, especially the ones with hands full of groceries, babies, and pets.

I don't have an Alexa either - how interesting and/or awful too!!!

It is hard enough for me to use Google Wallet and pay with my phone, which I just did today, but your palm, no I do not think I want that. Unless I forgot my wallet and phone, then it might be handy. Sorry for the pun.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 - when it comes to technology that is automated to withdraw money or has anything to do with my financial records, bank accounts, etc., it is a hard no.

I'm not sure how I feel about this technology. I use my fingerprint to unlock certain apps on my phone, but that isn't a public scanner. I would assume the technology is supposed to be more secure. I have not seen it in my state. Very interesting topic! Thanks for sharing it with us, Patricia.

Mar 21, 2025 08:43 AM

Pat Starnes-Front Gate Realty - you raise a good point. It's one thing to use your fingerprint to unlock your phone or a certain app, but a public scanner, it's another thing to worry about. More secure? I thought about that as I read what you wrote. In my areas, most stores have very few humans who work there and only a couple of Cashiers.

Can you imagine going into a store and as you're about to put your palm on the scanner, someone comes up behind you and puts their arms around you, as if they were with you, carrying a gun? The person with the big arms grabs merchandise and tosses it over you into the cart as you push the cart knowing there is a weapon on your backside. Then, you casually walk out the store, with the bad person and nobody reacts or thinks anything was wrong.

OMG! I wish they would get public opinions before introducing some of this new AI technology!

Hello Patricia Feager, I haven't seen a palm reader but I heard that Whole Foods stores will have them. I won't dare explore it, however, we don't know what payment methods will be eliminated in the future. I guess if I don't have any other choices, palm reader will be the payment method.

Mar 24, 2025 04:52 AM

Beth Atalay - I haven't experienced palm reader in any other local stores in my area. The world as we know it, is changing. I wouldn't "dare explore this option," for myself. As you say, if it happens, we'll have to know whether or not we have choices.

Have a nice day.
