Many Accidents Can Be Avoided

I am not sure why my mother was a neatnic to the extreme but maybe she wanted to avoid accidents in the home. Maybe as a stay at home mom she was just bored. Her neatness wore off on me for about 40 years... now not at all. My house is actually NOT represented in either picture below but somewhere in between.

My bad habit today is I will set things on the floor to be moved later. I rarely set something down in a "traffic" area but I will set it near the steps as a reminder to take it up or down in my next trip either way. Regretfully every once in a while I'm not sure I know what to do with something and it will sit there a week (or even two).

I don't know what the most common tripping hazard at home is but for me it's either walking up the basement stairway of tripping over a throw rug.

I hate to admit it but I'm getting older and more often than not these days when I trip I hit the ground as opposed to catching my balance. I guess it's time to clean up my act as well as my path around the house.

Do you enjoy the cartoons written by my son (Timmothy N. Timm) which I use as a springboard to write my daily posts? His strip, Titus & Philemon, has run in two newspapers for years as well as being printed in my blog every day. Titus & Philemon (pronounced Phi - Lee -Man) are guinea pigs. Their owner is Joe. Timmothy has never repeated a joke/comic strip in the 12 years he has been writing it. He has never copied another strip, such as Peanuts or Garfield. You can follow Timmothy on FB as Titus & Philemon and you can also check him out on Instagram as Instagram.com/titus and philemon/ .

Hello Bob - as we age tripping and balance issues can become part of the thought process.  Believe me, it's difficult to wonder "when and how did this happen".  Some childhood lessons learned come in handy even if they may have seemed bothersome way back when we first heard them.

So true Michael Jacobs . "Pick up your toys" are words I think most children learn early on.

Having things around to trip over gets to be a worse idea as we get older! A quick story that popped into my head. My first husband used to leave stuff all over the place, and I'd clean it up. But I didn't want to. I also didn't want to be a nag so after a few times asking him to clean his items up, I stopped asking. But I still didn't want to do it. So one day I decided to try a different method. He had his own clothes closet. So I took everything he left around the house and piled it in the bottom of the closet. That included dirty clothes, glasses, plates, etc. I kept doing that for a few days. He finally said, "hey, where's such-and-such" and I said, "Oh, it's in your closet" and he went to look. Luckily he laughed about it and tried to be better about picking stuff up. He wasn't too successful but at least he tried. Anyway, leaving stuff around could get someone else hurt!

Thanks for sharing a fun story Kat Palmiotti . Our daughter Tina was the worst when she lived with us as it seemed everything she owned was on her bedroom floor. Timmothy is also pretty messy but like Tina it's just in his room.

As you said Sham Reddy CRS it's an age thing. I was very good at gymnastics in school so I am shocked at how often I hit the ground now.

Good morning, Bob... admittedly, I'm a neatnik... so no tripping hazards in my home to speak of... maybe the dog toys, but I do go around and pick them up throughout the day.

Bob "RealMan" Timm I get totally stressed if everything isn't in its appointed place!

I used to really take pride in being tidy Nina Hollander, Broker but Carol never was and that led me to giving up.

Good morning Bob. I used to have an excellence sense of balance which has diminished over the years. These days I am much more cautious and so far so good. The benefit of having bad knees for so many years is it forces you to become more aware. Enjoy your day.

I have no excuse except age Wayne Martin although I did have knee surgery 26 years ago on my left knee.

As we grow older, all of us need to be careful. Falls are a common cause of injury. Dolores fell while getting something out of a drawer and required a hip replacement.

Yikes! Having had my shoulder replaced fairly recently Roy Kelley I can sympathize with Dolores very well.

Hi Bob,
There is no denying being aware of falling hazards is even more important than ever as we age.

I also encourage anyone over 40 (maybe even younger) to get checked for osteoporosis Carol Williams. I was diagnosed as having sever osteoporosis in my 40's.

Oh Lordie falling is not a good thing Bob!  And I have to be extra careful right now as I'm having hip surgery this Thursday. As for being a neatnic.  I'm one of those!

Thanks for the heads-up on the surgery so we can pray for you Anna "Banana" Kruchten . It's a good thing to get it done. I remember about 50 years back we thought my grandma fell and broke her hip... the Dr. said it was more likely that due to osteoporosis her hip broke and then she fell.

Thanks, Bob "RealMan" Timm! Your honesty about home hazards is both relatable and refreshing. It’s a good reminder for all of us to tidy up a bit—here's to cleaner paths and fewer tumbles! 🚶‍♂️✨

Hello Bob "RealMan" Timm - I am the complete opposite. Nothing is on my floors and my house is organized.  I always wear slippers in my home. As odd as it seems, I trip on my slippers ... never to the ground.  If that ever happens, I will just wear socks.

Yes I would say that it's the opposite Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist  BUT on the other hand I can walk in the door and plop down on the couch and be perfectly relaxed.
