On March 18, 2025, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau reported nationwide housing building permits lower 1.2% to 1,456,000 units in February of 2025 from 1,473,000 units in January of 2024, and decreased 6.8% from 1,563,000 in February of 2023. Single family building permits down 0.2% to a rate of 992,000 units in February of 2025, from 994,000 units in January of 2024, and there were 404,000 multifamily building permits issued in February of 2024.
Nationwide housing starts increased 11.2% to 1,501,000 units in February of 2025, from 1,350,000 units in January of 2025, but declined 2.9% from 1,546,000 units in February of 2024. Single family starts rose 11.4% to a rate of 1,108,000 units in February of 2025 from 995,000 in January of 2025, and there were 370,000 multifamily building starts in February of 2025.
Nationwide housing completions dropped 4.0% to 1,592,000 units in February of 2025 from 1,569,000 units in January of 2025, and lower 6.2% from 1,698,000 units in February of 2024. Single family housing completions gained 7.1% to a rate of 1,066,000 units in February of 2025, from 995,000 units in January of 2025, and there were 512,000 multifamily completions in February of 2025.
