Friday Fun…Color!

When I learned that today is International Color Day, I thought of all of the different colors we see daily.

Colors can change our mood and evoke memories…good and bad.  We learn from an early age that RED means stop and GREEN says we can go.

But relating it to real estate and selling houses, we always talk about using neutral colors and not too taste-specific.

One of my first clients who could not have been nicer, had a rainbow of colors in his house. There was the chartreuse family room, bright yellow kitchen, bold deep blue dining room, and bright red powder room that we needed to tone down.

Or another home that had just painted the exterior of their home a marine blue...and they were nowhere near any body of water!

Let’s have some Friday Fun. What color have you seen in a listing that went overboard and needed to be changed?

What do you do when your seller doesn’t see your point of view and does not want to paint either to give it a fresh coat or change the color??

Good morning, Kathy... one home I never forgot was a coop in NY City that had installed Barbie pink kitchen cabinets, appliances, and paint! OMG! Now you know I love pink... but this was truly over the top!

I had a seller with a totally Pepto-Bismol colored bathroom. It was enough to make you sick!!

Debra Leisek oh my, Debra! And I like pink... just not in my decor! I do remember the pink tiled bathrooms from the 1950's and 1960's.

Hello Kathy - over the years, in and away from real estate (you know the everyday world), I have seen a lot. And, perhaps most importantly, you can't please everyone - finding the "one" whether it be a potential buyer or lifelong partner is not as easy as some "say".

you're right about that! Michael Jacobs The home with the chartreuse wall...the owner said the UPS person loved it!!!

Good Friday morning, Kathy.

I have seen many unusual color selections over the years. I recall a purple house that we frequently passed and when we saw the owner in the yard, she became the purple lady in our conversations.

Roy Kelley LOL...I would have probably said the same thing.  I think I recall just one purple house.

When is International Black and White day. Maybe they could broadcast TV in black and white all day. The news might get better.

Kathy Streib - this is so true! DFW is culturally diverse. I can't tell you how many times I worked with a buyer who wouldn't even walk into a house if the direction the house was facing wrong, or everything wasn't perfect. If the last room, i.e., the Master Bedroom was fiery reddish orange, and they did not want that color they will still walk out and not stand to reason. You get the idea. Those were just a couple of examples. The wrong colors for superstitious reasons to me, were taken very seriously by the buyers.

Excellent post!

Patricia Feager you're right. When Larry was building, he made sure the stairs faced the back of the house if the demographic of buyers were Asian. (Feng shui! )  I was in shock when we moved to FL...I'd never seen so much pink in my life,

I met a young couple many years ago, and they had a wonderful house,  everything was staged beautifully till we got upstairs to one bedroom that was Pepto Bismal Pink, it was so bright even when you closed the door you could still see it on your eyeballs. Luckily they knew and over painted it.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 what's with the color pink???!!!  My friend's let their daughters choose their room colors once. It must have been the same color you saw...you needed sunglasses to go into the room.

When they had to rebuild after a fire, the girls were going to pick out a room color once again, My friend asked her decorator to limit the color swatches to ones that weren't so over the top.

Thanks for the colorful post, Kathy Streib! It's so true how shades can totally impact a space and even a sale. I love how you blend fun and practicality—here's to finding that perfect hue that makes everyone happy!

Lew Corcoran my seller with the deep blue and red bathrooms had just painted and was reluctant to paint. We put big white fluffy towels in the rooms to try to minimize the impact.

Not a client but a friend and a HUGE John Deere fan painted the exterior and much of the interior John Deere Green and Yellow Kathy Streib .

As far as a client her (deceased) husband was a Navy man and he painted the exterior a deep blue that everyone hated. It took 6 months to convince her to change it. It sold within a week of being painted white.

Oh Kathy I think I wrote about the most colorful house a few years or so ago.  A very dear lady, friend & client had some serious health issues as did her husband.  He had to go live in CA due to his issue which left her at home, alone most of the time.  She decided to make it fun and did so much color........and I'll show you a few pics if I can find them.  Of course when the time came for her to go into assisted living, we had to totally re-do the home and neutralize it.  I never had the heart to mention that to her.

Hi Kathy:

I have seen some "interesting" color combinations over the year but the most vivid was a home in MN. We were looking for a home in White Bear Lake and went to an open house. Every room was painted a different bright color including the ceilings while the kids bedrooms were vividly wallpapered. Most of the rooms had bright shag carpet as well - orange, purple, lime green, etc. It was amazing and not in a good way.

Dark red and burgundy seems to be the hardest to cover over in my experience.

I've had clients refuse to paint and you just have to work around it. In most cases people think the thing to do is to bring in the same color elsewhere in the room to match the walls. I always recommend using a different color that compliments or takes attention away from the color.

I have seen some pretty crazy colors. A dark mustard yellow and dark green floors was by far the worst.
