Baking Cookies for Open Houses

Home Inspector with National Property Inspections

If your home is for sale, the route to finding a buyer means making someone else feel like home. Many agents suggest baking cookies prior to an open house, not always an easy order on tight timetables. It's also not impossible. You can always buy the pre-made cookies available in from the refrigerated section in the grocery store. Throw the cookies on the pan, and bake. However, store-bought, refrigerated cookies can be expensive and may expire before you need them.

Another option is to make a big batch of your family's favorite drop cookies and freeze the batter in cookie-sized pieces. The dough will keep in freezer-safe containers for 4-6 weeks. Simply make your favorite dough, drop it onto cookie sheets that will fit in your freezer and freeze solid. Once the dough is frozen, transfer the cookie dough to freezer safe containers and put it back in the freezer. When the time for the next open house approaches, simply pull out what you need, place cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet, thaw for 25-35 minutes and bake according to the recipe instructions. By lining the baking sheet with parchment, you guarantee easy cleanup. Throw away the parchment and return the baking sheet to its place in the cupboard. It's an easy way to make a great impression.

Great post!

The best part about baking cookies for an open house isn't the cookies, by the way... its the AROMA!!

Baking cookies or brownies right before an open house fills the home with a warm, inviting aroma that candles and air fresheners can't contend with.  Plus, potential buyers automatically view scented candles as some sort of "cover up".  It's quite the contrary with baked goods, they immediately feel right at home!

Try it, it really does work!

Years ago I popped a frozen apple pie into the oven an hour before I showed my home for the first time.  The buyer wrote a contract the next day.

It's an easy one for an open house.  You can bring it home of dessert after dinner.
