This marks my fourth entry in the March ActiveRain Challenge, hosted by Patricia Feager and Lew Corcoran where we’re highlighting the individuals who’ve inspired us to become who we are today. One name that stands out for me is Floyd Wickman; a mentor and coach whose teachings left a lasting imprint on my real estate career.
Back in 1998 and 1999, our Northwest Coldwell Banker office offered us a 6-week Floyd Wickman course. It was described as one of the most effective, results-driven group programs in the real estate industry, built specifically to help agents and recruiters reach their goals. And it absolutely delivered.
The training we received was invaluable. So much so that Geno and I took the course both years, convinced of the power and importance of what we were learning. We were captivated by the sharp, well-dressed man leading our sessions; full of heart, humor, and practical wisdom. Floyd’s message was clear: Real Estate is about people. It’s about relationships. It’s about service.
Through his coaching, we learned how to overcome objections, create meaningful client experiences, communicate our values, and, most importantly, to listen. Those skills didn’t just help us become better agents; they shaped our entire approach to business and service.
We were so inspired that in 2000, we launched our very first personal marketing brochure that we used for many years before revamping.

The tagline on the cover read: “If it Matters to YOU, It Matters to Us.” Inside, another line spoke directly to Floyd’s influence: “We like to think of ourselves as not being in the Real Estate business, but in the business of helping families achieve their goals.” |

That philosophy came directly from one of Floyd’s most powerful teachings:
“It’s what you do when you do not have to, that will determine who you become when you can no longer help it.”
That quote has stayed with me all these years. It speaks to character, integrity, and self-discipline; the idea that our true growth comes from the choices we make when no one’s watching, when there’s no obligation or spotlight.
Floyd’s courses helped shape how Geno and I built our business and how I continue to practice real estate today. We even earned pins that read: “We get by Giving;” a mantra that became a guiding principle in both our personal and professional lives.
Floyd Wickman dedicated his life to helping others set meaningful goals and take actionable steps toward achieving them. His belief that it’s never too late, and that you have what it takes within you, continues to inspire me.
Thank you, Floyd. Your teachings and philosophy helped me become the best real estate agent I could be, and continue to strive to be.
