Motivational Monday…Achieve!

This weekend, Larry and I did some “hard time” in our front yard flower beds.  Spring weather means things begin to grow. That includes the weeds!  We try to keep on top of it with mulch.

We place cardboard on top of our beds, then place mulch on the cardboard. The cardboard inhibits the growth of weeds and it’s biodegradable.

It works like a charm!!! It took us 2 mornings and we were done in time for the first March Madness game of the day.

When we were laboring, I noticed a landscaping crew across the street working on our neighbors’ yards. There were 3 or 4 much younger people working and they were done in much less time.

Could/should we have hired someone to handle this?  Yes, it would have been easier but we’ve decided that as long as we have the time and are physically able to tackle these tasks, we will.

There are projects we have turned over to others and those we want to do ourselves.

I love gadgets, services, and today’s technology that free up our time yet there’s a great sense of achievement I get when I complete a chore or task…no matter how hard it was or how dirty I got.

Just ask Liz and Bill Spear, Kat Palmiotti, or Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! .

Good morning, Kathy. I applaud your and Larry's commitment to your yard. There are two things I don't do: garden or clean my house. Whatever I pay someone to do this for me is worth every cent.

Nina Hollander, Broker I understand. There will come a day when neither one of us want to do this anymore. Larry loves to tinker and such so this is good for him.

I've been working through a whole list of things we have to do prior to moving, and there will be a new long list once we get there.  Some things go as planned, and others prove more challenging than I expected.  E.g. our kitchen sink pull out head started to leak at the flex hose coupling.  Turns out our faucet manufacturer discontinued the model and the nozzle head to adapter isn't the same size as Moen/other mainstream faucets and no parts place had the hose I needed.  I eventually backed into it by buying a similar model faucet (but wrong color) on ebay just to get the part I needed.  Removing the part Saturday was easy enough, but putting the new one in?  Not so much since the hose didn't want to easily go past a restriction that isn't visible from the outside.  Eventually I figured out if I put a looped wire down the gooseneck and used my long shafted grasper (normally for grabbing dropped auto parts in an engine compartment) from the underside of the sink opening, I could come up past the restriction, grab the wire loop, pull it through, then wrap the other end of the wire around the threaded hose and pull it through the faucet.  After that, it was easy :)

Liz and Bill Spear I read your comment to Larry and he was shaking his head "yes' as in been there/done that. He's often cannibalizing other tools he has for parts. But in the end his delight is knowing he can do it!!!!

I was about sure I was going to need to make a trip to the hardware store and buy another new faucet if I couldn't figure out how to do it, so there was some incentive to get creative!

I have steadily been adding tools to my collection and cashed in some of my retirement bonus points to buy a decent table saw that I've had my eye on for over a year.  Some of the additions are to allow me to build some of the woodenware we need for beekeeping.  In most cases, I'm okay with paying for someone else to make those things, but other things don't have a good quality supplier, so I can reverse engineer existing parts and make my own.

Good morning Kathy,

Good for you and Larry! There is nothing better than working in a garden or a flower bed..its fun and a good project to take on together! Nothing better than that feeling of accomplishment from efforts you expended! As long as you have the time and physical ability it's good for the soul!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX When we were both working (and younger) we went through periods of having a lawn service and doing it ourselves. For our first home, Larry had a truckload of dirt dumped in our driveway. I came home to see our neighbor's children playing in it! We spent all day the following Saturday building flower beds in our front and back yards. It was refreshing.

Hello Kathy - like countless other vocations/avocations, a diligent gardener's work is never done.  The cardboard "trick" is a favorite of mine - and it has become increasingly important in these days where boxes flow like the Amazon.  HaHa.

Michael Jacobs one thing I did not like about pulling weeds was that they came back...immediately. The cardboard trick is a life-safer. I told Larry that this is why I order so much from Amazon...we need the boxes!!!

Good morning kathy. Doing what you can because you can keeps you young. Knowing when to turn jobs over to others keeps you from getting injured. Timing is everything. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin you're not kidding. When we were younger, we might have knocked out the mulching in one day. But we did have to stop for the NCAA games! LOL

I will have to do the spring planting.

Roy Kelley I love seeing a freshly mulched flowerbed!!!  Every seller needs to add this to their "to do" list.

Kathy my wife and I are of the same mind as you and Larry.  We will do as much as we can ourselves, for as long as we can.  We are not ready for weeds to start growing under our feet yet.   🤣

George Souto I don't know if you do your own mulching but I highly recommend the cardboard trick. We lucked out a few years ago and our neighbor's son who worked at U-Haul brought us a lot of boxes.

Kathy, never heard of putting cardboard in place of the landscaping material, genius!   I used to enjoy the time I spent in my garden and flower beds.  Miss it this time of year.

Joan Cox it works!!!!  There will always be a few weeds that pop through but the cardboard will degrade and the next year plop down more cardboard, then mulch.

Hi Kathy:

Sounds like you and Larry had a couple of very busy yard days. What a nice sense of achievement that must have been. We have been planting seeds and plants in pots in our back yard this past week - it's nice to see things growing with the warmer weather and plenty of sun.

Jeff Dowler, CRS there's a tremendous sense of accomplishment when you plant something yourself and watch it grow!!! I have not had much luck with seeds and better luck with orchids because they require very little attention.

I'm so glad our current home doesn't have as much yard work as our former homes. We have a good size area in front of the house that needs attention in the spring, but very little care during the summer. The spring clean up is usually just a few hours.

Hi Kathy, I've also been busy in my gardens planting some flowers. We just moved so I have a much smaller garden space but want to make it beautiful. I can appreciate you and Larry's desire to DIY while you're able. If you have the time and physical ability, why not get outside and enjoy even if it requires some work.

Wow that is very impressive Kathy!  You guys are way more ambitious than I am by a long shot!  We have gardeners take care of our yard for us and always have. The only thing I keep track of is making sure they don't cut off the blooming flowers!  Why those guys do that is beyond me!
