Reclaiming Creativity and Resilience: My Interview with Susan Hensley 🎙️🖍️

I recently had the honor of interviewing Susan Hensley on the Time to Shine Today podcast, and I have to say — this conversation stuck with me.

Susan is a transformational coach, speaker, and author who helps people navigate life’s transitions with joy, creativity, and resilience. And the tools she uses? Crayons, color, and play. 🎨

At first, it sounds simple. But after speaking with Susan, I realized it's actually revolutionary.

We talked deeply about her journey from journalism to corporate leadership, and now coaching. She has helped countless people rediscover their authentic selves by embracing uncertainty, getting a little messy, and letting go of the need to “be perfect.”

Here are just a few of the incredible knowledge nuggets Susan shared:

  1. ✏️ You don’t need artistic talent to be creative
Creativity is about expression, not performance. Stop waiting until you’re “good” enough.

  2. 🖍️ Use crayons to crush limiting beliefs
Crayons unlock a childlike confidence. The part of you that’s been silenced by judgment deserves to speak again.

  3. 💥 Honor the mess
Transitions aren’t tidy. The awkward in-between is where growth and breakthroughs are born.

  4. ⏱️ Start with just three minutes
Don’t have hours? You don’t need them. Three minutes of playful creativity can shift your entire mindset.

  5. 🎨 Art is for everyone
You don’t have to be an “artist” to benefit. In fact, creativity flows even more when you drop the pressure.

  6. 💪 Build emotional resilience
This isn’t just fun — it’s strength training for your soul.

And then Susan dropped this quote that hit me hard:

⏱️ “Three minutes of messy, playful creativity can completely shift your state of mind and bring you back to yourself.” – Susan Hensley

This is about more than crayons. It’s about unlocking joy, reclaiming your voice, and rediscovering the value of being YOU.

If you’re in the middle of a big change — personally, professionally, or emotionally — I highly encourage you to revisit play. The tools are already in your hands.

How do YOU reset when life gets messy? I’d love to hear your go-to method for creative release or emotional recharge in the comments below 👇
