A Walk Down Memory Lane - The Million Dollar Club

By
Real Estate Agent with Front Gate Real Estate Broker 11085

I found this full-page newspaper promo last week while going through a file in the office. The year was 1992, and the Columbus MS Board of Realtors had released the list of Top Real Estate Producers for 1991.

I had been in real estate a couple of years, and earning the distinction of Top Producer was a big deal. I was honored to be among the 47 Top Producers in the Columbus, MS market.

Newspaper Article from 1991

When I decided to get into real estate, I chose a small agency to affiliate with. It was the perfect fit for me. The partners took me under their wing and advised me when I needed help, encouraged me when I failed, and included me in their work family. I look back at this time in the business with appreciation for Rick, Gerry, and Hilbert as they set me on the path for success.

I learned so much from each of them. Rick, our Sales Manager, once laughed so hard the Friday afternoon he "suckered" me into taking his floor duty so he could leave early. But he was also the one who encouraged me to get into real estate investing. Hilbert was the "Great Qualifier". He let me ride along while he showed homes. After each house, he would ask "so what did you think?". He was a natural at it, and at the time I thought to myself I could never ask such an thing.

Gerry was the Mother Hen who took the newbies under her wing and nurtured us. I remember the day she gave me my production report for my first year, and commented that "most new agents didn't do that well" and I thought I hadn't done well enough!

My hometown was small, and it was several years before I had built a solid business with repeat customers and referrals. Those early years were challenging ones. But I will always cherish the time I spent with my three mentors, Rick, Hilbert, and Gerry.

Good morning, Pat... mentors like Rick, Hilbert and Gerry make all the difference in a new agent's life. You were so fortunate to have them in your life. So many agents just flounder around until they quit.

Pat Starnes-Front Gate Realty - I really enjoyed reading about your humble beginnings by being shepherd by Gerry, Rick, and Hilbert! To be trained and nurtured by the "Mother Hen who took the newbies under her wing," was a wonderful gift she bestowed on you! I think the best way for Broker's to get newbies out of the gate is to do exactly what you received. Because they cared about you, as a newbie you were well on your way to succeed and you're still in business.

Kudos to you! Thank you for sharing your wonderful beginnings for this March 2025 AR Challenge: Sharing the Gift of Who You Are!!!

Pat Starnes-Front Gate Realty you were blessed in those early years to have that kind of support.  Many fail in this business, because they are just sent out on their own to sink or swim.  Most sink.

Oh, I remember when those articles came out in the local paper - and miss those days a little too! You certainly were blessed to have such wonderful mentors but, I am confident they ALL saw the drive you have and knew you were going to be wildly successful. I'm sure you were a great grasshopper too! 🦗

I had similar experiences when I started in the early 80's.  One aspect of our profession that I disliked was the "Million and Multi-Million Dollar" clubs.  I requested to never be in those ads, as it seemed to imply that we, as agents, were making the "Million Dollars", and it sent the wrong message.  Instead, I requested that any ads about my accomplishments emphasized the number of successful transactions that I had completed.  That minor shift created far more referrals than boasting a money figure.

Jeff Masich-Scottsdale AZ Associate Broker,MBA,GRI - still going strong but being more selective. :)

Nina Hollander, Broker - mentors are so important! Nowadays, anyone with a pulse can get in the business, but without proper training and mentoring they will flounder.

Thank you Patricia Feager for co-hosting the March challenge. And thanks for your kind words on mentoring. I believe it is essential for new agents to receive quality mentoring in order to succeed.

Pat Starnes-Front Gate Realty what a beautiful tribute and reminder of how important it is to pour into others!  We get so lazer focused on our own business, we rarely take a minute to pour our great experiences into those new to the business!
