Unfortunately many who are eager to be pet owners did not think things out before they purchased or adopted their pet. This is the number one reason humane shelters across the USA are full and even worse, animals are abused and reported to the ASPCA.
There are two rescues for pets in the Minot ND area. One I do not recommend, the other is excellent. I advise people to avoid The Souris River Animal Shelter. It is my opinion their track record of putting fundraising first caused the catastrophic collapse and emanate closure until the City jumped in and took over.
On the other hand I encourage people to support For Belle's Sake. For Belle's Sake is located SE of Minot (just a few miles) and they care about the animals FIRST and they have never had money management problems.
Those of you who have been reading my posts for a while may remember my post about the two parakeets that saved my daughter Tina's life. I believe they have other critters for adoption such as guinea pigs too.
You may be wondering about the text line at the top of the picture above: Rescue and Rehabilitation. The farm that For Belle's Sake is located on is owned and run by my favorite veterinarian. She operates a business called The Pet Vet which is a mobile operation. She comes to you. It's a wonderful service that is far less stressful the standard veterinarian.
My association with The Pet Vet started 25 years ago when I owned a pet store in a very small town 50 miles from any sizable community. Sharon had just started her business and I was hoping she would be willing to make the trip to Underwood ND. She did and has continued to do so, I believe weekly, today.
In conclusion I want to say that if you are considering your first pet read up on it's needs and demands of your time. Rescue! Don't keep the puppy mills in business.
