Crime Rate in The Villages, Florida

In the list of questions, I get asked regularly is “what about crime in The Villages?”  Surfing the internet and reading several different articles I have condensed into a few paragraphs.  First The Villages is listed as the safest place to live in Florida due to low crime rate and being far enough inland to avoid tropical storm damage according to published reports.

I attended a briefing provided by Sumter County Sheriff Office and the two most common crimes are opportunity and crimes against seniors which includes cyber and phone.  Let’s start with opportunity, driving your golf cart to the square with your expensive golf clubs on the back and your portable sound system on the dash, while leaving the keys in the ignition!  You hope to park on the square but no parking so you park behind the square in a parking lot.  That is opening the door for opportunity!

Cyber and phone crime is a problem in any senior citizen community.  Sad stories of folks falling for scams draining savings accounts and being too embarrassed to report the incident.  I know of one case personally of a senior losing over $40,000 over a period of months.  If you are not sure about a call or something on your computer ask somebody before sending money!

Burglary and theft stats are very low in The Villages, if you follow Villages-News.com you see more drug-related and DUI incidents than violent crimes.

Good morning Dick. What one should expect in The Villages. Cyber and phone scams within a target rich environment. Physical crime not so much. Safe as a senior can get. Enjoy your day.

That makes sense - leaving things in the open and leaving keys in the ignition aren't a good idea no matter where you  live!

Hi Dick- I agree with what Wayne Martin said. No matter where you are, you have to protect your belongings!  Don't make it easy for them.
