🌲 Spring in the Mountains… and Why It’s the Perfect Time to Prep for Winter!
So—you’ve just bought your dream mountain retreat? Congratulations! 🎉 You've achieved what so many homebuyers dream of: peaceful mornings with coffee on the deck, panoramic mountain views, green meadows, and wildflowers in full bloom. Spring in the mountains is nothing short of magical!
But while you’re soaking in that fresh mountain air, now is also the perfect time to start thinking ahead… to your very first winter in the high country. ❄️⛰️
Mountain winters can be breathtakingly beautiful—but they also come with their own set of challenges. Here’s how to set yourself up for success:
🚗 1. Prepare for Mountain Driving
Steep, winding roads and unpredictable snowstorms are part of the mountain lifestyle. Before winter hits, make sure your vehicle is ready to handle the terrain.
✔️ Invest in all-weather or snow tires (I personally love BF Goodrich All-Terrains!)
✔️ Make sure your car is 4WD or AWD
✔️ Download a road condition app (like COtrip) to stay up-to-date before hitting the road
Safety starts with your tires and traction—don’t wait for the first snow to be ready!
❄️ 2. Plan for Snow Removal
From long driveways to icy walkways, staying on top of snow is a must. You’ll want to stock up before the first flakes fall.
✔️ Pick up sturdy snow shovels (ACE Hardware & Big R in Conifer and Bailey are great local spots!)
✔️ Consider a snow plow attachment for your truck, Jeep, or ATV
✔️ Don’t forget salt or sand for icy steps and porches!
Slips and falls are common, but totally preventable with the right tools on hand.
🔥 3. Think About Your Heat Source
Many mountain homes are heated with wood stoves or fireplaces, so it’s a great idea to start collecting wood in spring and summer.
✔️ Plan for 2–3 cords per 1,000 sq ft (according to Lenhoff’s Supply)
✔️ Cut from your own property (with proper guidance) or get a wood permit via recreation.gov
✔️ Not into DIY? Buy local—wood usually runs $300–$350 per cord in Park County
Stack it now, thank yourself later when that first snow comes early!
💡 Final Thoughts
Spring is an incredible time to start your mountain journey—but winter prep is key to truly enjoying it year-round. The more prepared you are now, the more magical and stress-free those snowy months will feel.
