Still Spring Cleaning? More Areas to Consider!

In a recent post, I mentioned some areas that can be neglected when we tackle Spring cleaning tasks.

You’re not done yet.  Here are more often forgotten areas that need cleaning…

-The Microwave

We use these almost every day. But how often do you remove the turntable and clean it? You can microwave a bowl of water and vinegar (1 cup water to 1-2 Tablespoons of vinegar) to deodorize it then wipe down the walls with the solution.

-Cabinets

This is an ideal time to remove everything, wipe the shelves, and reorganize what you have. You can use Murphy’s Oil Soap on cabinets but check with your manufacturer first.

-Drawers

Remove everything and wipe out your drawers and trays.

Do the same with all of your drawers.

-Knife block-Clean your knife block (if you have one) and your utensil holder. You can wash it with warm soapy water. To give it an even deeper clean, make a mild solution of bleach and water, take a pipe cleaner and clean the slots. Rinse and let it dry thoroughly.

Want more areas to clean?

 -Lampshades and the lightbulbs

 -Air Filters

 -Ceiling Fan Blades

 -Window sills

 -Baseboards

 -Pictures and their frames

 -Tops of door jams

 -Clean upholstered cushions

-Wash, clean or replace your garbage cans, recycle bins, and trash cans

 -The books on your bookshelves.

- Cords-dust all those cords hiding behind your appliances

- Plants- toss out ones that are beyond hope. Clean the planters and saucers. It’s a good time to repot them too!

-Behind and under furniture

Don’t forget to give yourself a break to enjoy the Spring weather and flowers!!

Good morning, Kathy... thankfully I have a wonderful housekeeper who does most of this cleaning every other week, not just in spring. And I have a terrific young man who comes quarterly to my house and does a garbage bin detailing for $40 a visit. A bargain for two large bins if you ask me... no way I could do that... those bins are almost as big as I am. I change air filters in my house each month (whether they need it or not). And since I have no plants inside my house, that's one thing off my list for cleaning! :)

Good morning Kathy. The wife and I have put most of these into our normal routine but even we forget an item or two over time. Great list. Enjoy your day.

Hello Kathy - clutter, messiness and disorder can be difficult to control.  And when it seems things are in order, it's time to start the process again.  The term, Rinse - Repeat comes to mind over and over.  Then, again.

Michael Jacobs I don't mind the chores but it seems as if you do them, blink and it's time to do them again.

I think it is so important to clean all the appliances. People look at stoves, microwaves, AC filters. I think the assumption is...if you keep the small things clean, you keep the big ones clean as well.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty I agree. When a buyer sees how well maintained those items are, they have a good feeling about how you've cared for the rest of the home.

Hi Kathy:

There are lots of great suggestions here and it's also a good opportunity to get rid of unwanted stuff that's lurking! Makes me tired just thinking about all that can (and should) be done. And it's some good preparation for those who are planning to sell!

Jeff

Thank you Jeff Dowler, CRS The drawers, pantries, etc are areas that buyers always look at. The more neat and clean they are, the better.

What a great list Kathy!  I like the idea of water and vinegar to clean the microwave. I'm kind of a clean freak and thankfully we've got the best cleaning team in town that handles all of the big and little stuff for us.  It's helped me out a great deal this past few months and I'm happy looking around knowing it's actually clean!!  Except it does need some dusting as it was very windy the last few days.  Never a dull moment, right!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten I'll bet you have a lot of dust or sand. I love using vinegar to clean when I can. I just placed a bowl of it in the top rack of my dishwasher and ran it.
