While we often think of it as a classic American dish, many cultures have their own cheesy, toasted versions. Having lived in France, I can confirm that the Croque Monsieur is a beloved staple in French cafés and a delicious take on grilled cheese. So no, America didn’t invent grilled cheese—we just gave it the lunchbox fame it enjoys today.
