ACROSS THE BOARD

THE TIMELESS APPEAL OF SCRABBLE ON NATIONAL SCRABBLE DAY & EVERY DAY

It's National Scrabble Day. Do you like playing Scrabble? I sure do. My entire family does—and trust me, it can get very competitive. But beyond the fun and rivalry, Scrabble is actually a great way to sharpen language and thinking skills. It pushes you to expand your vocabulary, recognize word patterns, and think strategically with limited resources. Every game is like a mini workout for the brain—perfect for those of us with "aging" brains!

HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT SCRABBLE?

13 FUN FACTS ABOUT SCRABBLE:

  2. 1.5 million Scrabble games are sold each year.

  3. Playing ScrabbleOver a third of American households own a Scrabble game.

  4. Scrabble has been translated into 30+ languages. Scrabble is also used all over the world as a means of teaching English.

  6.  Nigeria is considered the most Scrabble-obsessed country and the Scrabble capital of the world where top players get paid to play!

  7. The highest scoring word in Scrabble is OXYPHENBUTAZONE, worth 1,784 points.

  9. Each hour of the day, some 30 Scrabble games are started.

  11. If all the Scrabble tiles ever produced were lined up, they would stretch for more than 50,000 miles!

  12. Scrabble is ranked as the second-best board game in U.S. history, second only to Monopoly.

  13. In 1994, controversy hit when Hasbro removed nearly 200 “offensive” words from its dictionary. They later published two versions—a clean one for schools and a full version (yes, with the dirty words) for tournaments.

Hello Nina - although it has been a long time since playing, I have fond memories of Scrabble.   Thank you for sharing some facts gathered from around the globe.

Good morning Nina. Never got into the game of Scrabble but my grandson will have me playing it soon. Enjoy your day.

By the way, when I hit "publish" on my post this morning, after quite some time, I got the "504 Gateway time-out" message.  Then I got notice that you commented on that same post. Now back into the site for the second time, it was posted. Tomorrow and some adjustments to the site by Development  can't come too soon.

Wayne Martin hi Wayne... when our grands were kids they loved to play Scrabble and they still do as adults.

As for the the slowness here today, it's beyond. I just got off the platform this morning because I was going crazy waiting for stuff to "take" and then getting the time-out message. I am less sanguine than you about this being fixed. It's been an issue for years now.

Jeffrey Richman it's a fun game, Jeff... and what's nice is that you can play it with two people. So many games just don't work unless you have three or four players.

Joan Cox hi Joan... the kids gave us a "deluxe" edition some years back... the board is large and rolls like a Lazy Susan. I love it.

Good evening Nina,

I always liked scrabble and we use to play it...still have the game. Now it seems we like Wordle which is how I start my day with a cup of freshly brewed coffee!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX hi Dorie... we are so tethered to our phones and computers I avoid things like Wordle... for me half the fun is sitting around a table with family and competing in person.

What a fun post this was, and I learned quite a few things. It has been many years since I've played Scrabble, probably when our 2 daughters were growing up.
