Motivational Monday…Is a Smile Ever Wasted?

Is a smile ever wasted?  Have you walked by a person and smiled at them…perhaps added a “Good morning” and received nothing?

When we’re out walking, we always smile at those we pass. More often than not, we add a “Good morning.” There are walkers we’ve met and had conversations with…those we meet and see almost daily—who share a smile and perhaps a friendly exchange.

However, we often pass walkers wrapped up in their thoughts or listening intently to something on their pods. They don't smile, some barely look up. I get it.

However, some see you but don’t smile or return a smile given to them. They look at you and keep walking.

The other day when this occurred, I wondered…Did I waste a smile??

You know the answer…no smile is ever wasted.

A young man Larry and I saw on our morning walks in FL never smiled. He focused on the ground.

He became my “project.” I continued to smile and wish him good morning. Then it happened…one morning, he looked up, and replied…"Good morning" with a slight smile.

THERE’S MORE!

This continued for months. One day, I  was distracted watching an alligator by the boardwalk.  I was focused on the gator and not on anyone approaching me.

What a pleasant surprise when he smiled and wished me Good morning!!!

We never know what someone is experiencing or what they have endured. He may have moved to the area and was not used to strangers greeting him.

Any smile or gesture of kindness is never wasted!!!

A smile is the shortest distance between two people.
Victor Borge

Smile, it is the key that fits the lock of everybody’s heart.
Anthony J. D'Angelo

A smile is the light in our window that tells others that there is a sharing, caring person inside.

Good morning Kathy -The story your shared in this post was so great! You never gave up and later on you found out that your smiles and good mornings were never wasted; he reciprocated when you least expected it.  Great quotes, thanks for sharing them.

Good morning, Kathy... a smile is never wasted. Ever. I've always loved that quote by Victor Borge. One of my favorite quotes about smiles is by one of my favorite comedians, George Carlin: "everyone smiles in the same language." Ain't that the truth!

Nina Hollander, Broker I love the George Carlin quote as well. Yes, it IS the truth. No matter what language you speak, and even if you aren't able to vocalize, we can still smile and have it understood anywhere.

Good morning. A smile with a good morning costs absolutely nothing and yet the riches received often are incredible. Great post Kathy!

Hello Kathy - I am not the most smiley person.  Or the least for that matter either.  Life is a combination of gestures, thoughts, behaviors and many sorts of other things.

I have it said it before, perhaps even earlier today while leaving a comment on another post - it's simply complicated.  And there are times when a smile, a relatively small act or something similar is reciprocated. Maybe even unexpectedly.   So, smiling or any such kindness isn't wasteful.  It isn't even waste management; it can become part of you.

Michael Jacobs When I was younger, I remember walking up to some retail counters. When the sales clerk forgot her smile and was a little "cranky", I found that smiling helped erase the frown.

I totally agree with you on this, I always smile at people and often it triggers an automatic smile in response, especially with kids.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 kids love it!!! I see it when we're walking. Mom is pushing them in the stroller and often looks at her phone or talks to a friend. If you smile at the child, it's amazing how they smile back.

It takes less energy to smile that it does to hold a frown so it should be considered as life lengthening, and we would be providing a valuable service.

Kathy all the years of hiking the trails behind our house taught me a lot about people and how they react to a simple smile...and perhaps a Good Morning!  For some it is like an opening statement to a new friendships.....and that has happened a lot along those trails!  For others their heads are down and are consumed by music or whatever they're listening to.  Like the young man you mentioned, it's a good feeling when a 'shy' person finally opens up just a bit......it's a good start!

I agree Anna "Banana" Kruchten  We've made friends from our walks. It began as a mile and Good Morning and then you stop to chat!

Having visited Germany five times now, I'm still not used to the lack of interaction. Not only do most of the people you pass by not smile or speak, they rarely make eye contact.

I love your determination to make that man smile and how it paid off. Nicely done!

Some smiles are wasted, but I will keep giving them, haha.  There are too many fake people in the world, both those who give smiles and receive them, haha.

Hi Kathy:

No I don't think a smile is ever wasted, even if you don't get one in return. A hi or hello, or how are you, can make the difference.

Those quotes are wonderful.

Nice to hear you connected with that inward looking person on your walks.  It's fun when someone returns my smile with a sense of surprise on their face.  Smiles, a universal language.
