The Mystery of the Missing Cabbage

A Tale that Might Just Make You Smile

Introduction

Ever have one of those days that starts out completely normal but takes an unexpected turn? Picture this: a sunny morning in the neighborhood, the birds chirping, the usual crowd bustling about. As someone headed to the local farmer's market, excitement buzzed in the air. Fresh produce and homemade goodies, who could resist that?

The Farmer's Market Adventure

The market was alive with chatter and laughter. Amid the colorful stalls overflowing with fresh veggies, one particular vendor caught attention. A friendly older man, with a twinkle in his eye, had the biggest heads of cabbage you’d ever seen. They were like basketballs, no joke! Curiosity got the best of it, so a quick chat ensued.

“Best cabbage around!” he proclaimed, waving a leafy green triumphantly. After a few playful exchanges about the best recipes for cabbage rolls, the decision was made. An epic cabbage purchase became necessary. However, as the payment was made, distraction struck—the vendor's energetic dog zoomed by, knocking over a nearby stand, sending tomatoes flying everywhere.

Searching for the Right Cabbage

In the chaos, a moment of realization happened. The cabbage was set aside while the situation played out. After a flurry of laughter and help to tidy up, the cabbage vendor grinned and offered a fresh head free of charge. With gratitude expressed, the cabbage was claimed and stashed in the shopping bag.

However, upon arriving home, a strange scenario unfolded. The cabbage was nowhere to be found! Was it lost in the market mayhem, or had it been left behind? There was no memory of putting it back after the distraction. Did the dog snatch it or cast a spell of invisibility on it? Questions piled up.

A Silly Reflectio

What may seem like a silly anecdote sparks a thought. Life often throws distractions our way. It’s easy to lose track of what truly matters—or in this case, a huge cabbage. Maybe that’s the point: don’t sweat the small stuff. Laughter may be found in the oddest situations.

Conclusion

In the end, whether the cabbage ever existed may be a mystery left unsolved. Sometimes, embracing a little chaos leads to fun stories worth sharing. So, what’s a little cabbage among friends?

Good morning Lew. Did you check the floor of your back seat? Many a lost item has been found there, ha, ha. Time for a trip back to that market next week to get one you don't lose. Enjoy your day.

Hi Lew,
Thanks for the smile, and the reminder that sometimes the best thing to take home from the farmer’s market isn’t the veggies, it’s the story.

I loved the story Lew! I'm betting on the back seat and then it rolled under the front seat! Today I left my UT mug in the conference room at our Master Mind meeting which is downstairs. I didn't miss it at my office during the day but as I took the elevator down I realized I wasn't carrying it. It finally dawned on me to go to the Building Management office as it was their conference room where we had our meeting. Sure enough they had it waiting for me!

Hi Lew Corcoran - your story sounds like a Texas Tall Tale! It would be perfect for a Toastmaster's Tall Tale Contest! It was very entertaining and the scene you illustrated painted pictures in my head of the event with all that sudden chaos and laughter! You have to wonder, was the FREE large head of cabbage intentional? Perhaps a brilliant marketing skit to get the crowd all excited???

Thank you, Patricia Feager ! I love the idea of it being a Texas Tall Tale—what a fantastic compliment! Your vivid imagination and insight truly bring an extra layer of fun to the story. 🌟🥬

Lew Corcoran - I spent many years in Toastmasters and the Texas Tall Tales was one of my favorites. Those are the great stories heard around a campfire or told by the elders passed down to their grandchildren.

The Cabbage Story definitely qualifies!

Hi Lew:

I got drawn in by your title and I had to find out about the cabbage. It was of interest, in part, given we are avid farmers market attendees, and an entertaining tale.

I think you need to go back and find that vegetable stand and buy another cabbage - think salads, steamed, cole slaw, stuffed cabbage rolls and more.

Jeff
