What should a new real estate agent do first?

first task for a new agent

As a new real estate agent, you may have dozens of people telling you what to do to gather some prospects that you can turn into clients.

That’s because there ARE plenty of things you can do to attract business.

However, there’s one thing you should do first.

That is to notify everyone in your sphere of influence that you are now a licensed real estate agent, ready and able to give them information they want – and to help them buy or sell if they’re ready to do so.

Perhaps you don’t think you have a sphere of influence.

I know that the first time someone said that to me my reaction was that I didn’t have influence over anyone. Who would I notify?

But you DO have a sphere of influence. It includes all of your family members, allyour sphere of influence includes other volunteers of your friends, and all of the people with whom you do business. It also includes your parents’ friends, your children’s friends, and people you’ve worked with in previous jobs. In addition, it includes people you know from your volunteer work or your membership in various organizations. In other words, it includes everyone who knows you and just might like you!

Start writing down names, because the list can be long!

If you have, or can get, their mailing addresses, that’s wonderful. You can also gather their email addresses. If you have neither, you can also create a hand-out to give to people you’ll be seeing. For instance, your hairdresser, your dentist, or your dog groomer.

What you say to them is important. The last thing you want to do is beg for business, so come at it from a different perspective. Tell them that you want to be their information resource.

Toward that end, I’ve written a letter that you can customize and use before the day is over – and that letter is FREE for you to use.

Just click here. You’ll be taken to my shopping cart, where you’ll find the letter is free.

Hi Marte- it is daunting when someone tells you to contact your SOI. Names swirl around in your head. Make a list and one name will lead to another.

Good evening Marte,

Excellent suggestion for someone just started into Real Estate. It's amazing how many people you know once you start making your list!

Hello Marte - brainstorming can be powerful.  Putting your mind to work can help put your thoughts into action.

That's excellent advice - we want to be a source of information!

Also, a lot of us have reconnected with people from high school/college through social media. Call those people as well just to chat and get reconnected. Eventually, maybe not in the first call, the conversation will turn to "so what do you do?"

Hi Marte... I was about to say get a CRM... but you're correct... put that list together first, then enter it into your CRM!
