Using Technology May Lower Risk of Dementia

I read an interesting article the other day “Technology use may be associated with a lower risk for dementia, study finds” and thought I sure hope so!  In the aging process we hear “use it or lose it” when it comes to our mental and physical well-being.  The Villages is a great place for physical well-being with golf, pools, pickleball, walking trails and so much more but what about mental.

The article starts out with “With the first generation of people exposed widely to technology now approaching old age, how has its use affected their risk of cognitive decline?”  There were 57 studies totaling 411,430 older adults found technology use was associated with a 42% lower risk of cognitive impairment, which was defined as a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment or dementia, or as subpar performance on cognitive tests.

Forms of technology included computers, smartphones, internet, email, social media, or mixed/multiple uses.  I started with a bag phone and my first computer in the late 80’s with Windows 2.0 sure hope this counts!  The article says mindless scrolling on social media might not count, remember that when you visit certain Facebook Groups.

I think it all adds up to connecting with other people - they also say that it is important to maintain your hearing and your eye sight and to stay in social contact with others.

Dick Betts I am not sure I understand how technology lowers the risk of dementia.  I have been using several forms of technology for many, many years, and I don't think it his helped me in the remembering department.  I still can't remember why I walk into a room sometimes ...... LOL

Thanks for sharing this intriguing insight, Dick Betts! I love how you tied technology use to our mental well-being—who knew our smartphones could be brain boosters? Here’s hoping we all keep clicking, swiping, and, yes, avoiding that mindless scroll! 📱🧠✨
