Whatever happened to Tub/Shower Combos

By

A few weeks ago, we had a client that wanted a bathtub in their new home, hmmm need to look at pictures on the MLS.  The more I looked the more I realized most homes today only have showers.  When did this happen?  I asked AI: The decline in favor for tub showers and a rise in preference for walk-in showers began in the 1980s and 1990s, particularly with the introduction of whirlpool tubs. While tubs were still considered a necessity in homes, the preference for oversized, deluxe showers, especially those with multiple controls and rainfall heads, grew significantly. This shift is partly driven by practicality, with many homeowners prioritizing the efficiency and spa-like experience of a spacious, walk-in shower.

Ok that makes sense, most bathroom remodels the tub/shower combo is removed for a more spacious walk-in shower.  Now this is where people are getting carried away, rainforest shower heads, body jets, hand wand maybe even a waterfall.  Before long we will have a George Jetson conveyor belt system in our bathrooms!

P.S. Have you ever considered how many things from that show in the 60’s is a reality today?

Thanks Dick for sharing great information on tub and shower combinations!!!

Hello Dick - your post has a bit of Flashback Friday feel to it.  The Jetsons as well as The Flintstones were a part of my childhood.  Interpretation of the past as well as the future is interesting.

Good morning! We have two bathrooms, one has a large walk-in shower and one has a bath/shower combo. I'm surprised to hear people are totally giving up on the shower/bath combo. Interesting!

Good morning Dick. We have been through it all. Once had a jacuzzi so big the floor had to be reinforced to handle the load in addition to an additional hot water tank. My nephews and son thought it was a small swimming pool. A novelty for a few years while they were young. Now, no bathtub in the primary bedroom but a large shower. Seems as if we move as our preferences change. Enjoy your day.

I see it more often than not these days, unless the bathroom is big enough for both, it seems that people prefer showers, haha.

Still no flying cars, or Rosie- though we do seem to be getting closer to both. Anyone considering a 2 bed or larger in NYC that is renovating a bathroom, we advise if there is just one bathroom that it should include a tub/shower, but if there are 2 baths that it's ok if one is a walk in shower.  If the apartment is a 1 bed or studio, not having a bathtub is ok because on resale, you generally aren't expecting an audience with young children. Most of our buyers have a 5-7 year ownership period- so resale considerations tend to rank high.

Thanks, Dick Betts! You've raised some great points about the shift in bathroom design. It’s interesting to see how preferences have changed—who knows, maybe we'll have those futuristic setups sooner than we think!

Dick Betts I can see the preference for a walk in shower in an adult community.  BUT for a family with young children I would think a tub/shower combo would be the preference.

Hi Dick- We have the separate shower and tub, which we've used maybe 4 times. When I was staging in South FL, I started seeing fairly new homes with showers that were almost as big as my first galley kitchen,

We have 3 bathrooms with one having only a shower and the other 2 shower/tub combos.  Tub rarely get used.  Have a new grandson so the one tub is fixing to get a few years of action soon.

A home with a tub can attract buyers, while a home without one might lose interest. It's surprising how much a simple feature like this can impact decisions!

Dick:

I can't recall seeing a house that only had a shower, or two, and no tub at all. However, plenty of people seem OK with a shower only in the primary bath but still want a tub and shower in any guest bath.

I think that for your demographics in the VIllages, it makes sense to go with nice walk in showers.  I have a listing in Leisure World (not nearly as nice a community as the Villages) and the seller is replacing the tub for a walk in shower

Some folks maintain that you can't sell a home without a bath tub.  I am not one of them. and I have two showers in my house.
