For the Love of PEEPS®: A Sweet Easter Obsession! 🐣🧺 🐰
Just how big are PEEPS® in the Easter world? Turns out, they're huge. 70% of PEEPS® sales happen during the Easter season.
EASTER BASKETS AREN'T JUST ABOUT CHOCOLATE BUNNIES! 🧺🐣🐰
Growing up, my Easter basket was always filled with chocolate eggs, jelly beans, and the classic chocolate bunny. But oddly enough, I never encountered PEEPS® as a kid. These days, though, they’re everywhere — entire aisles of pastel-colored marshmallow creatures popping up in supermarkets each spring. That got me thinking: Just how big are PEEPS® in the Easter world? Turns out, they're huge. 70% of PEEPS® sales happen during the Easter season.
WAIT! PEEPS® Outsell Jelly Beans? 14 Sweet Facts You Didn't Know:
Made in Bethlehem, PA – PEEPS® are produced by Just Born, Inc., and they've been around since 1953 — over 70 years of marshmallow magic.
They drop a giant Peep on New Year’s Eve – Instead of a ball drop, Bethlehem lowers a massive 400-pound Peep chick at midnight. Now that’s a party!
Over 2 billion PEEPS® are made every year – That’s more than 5.5 million per day, equal to about six PEEPS® for each man, woman and child in the USA. If you lined them all up, they could circle the Earth multiple times.
From hand-made to high-speed – Originally, it took 27 hours to make just one Peep. Now? They crank out 3,500 a minute.
600 million PEEPS® are eaten during Easter alone – That’s more than jelly beans! For over 20 years, PEEPS® have been the top non-chocolate Easter candy.
Not just for eating – About a third of PEEPS® sold are used as decorations, not snacks.
Simple ingredients, same classic recipe – Marshmallow, sugar, corn syrup, gelatin, and a few secret extras — whipped up into fluffy goodness. A whopping 400 pounds of sugar is used per batch for Peeps’ colored sugars! The recipe hasn’t changed much in decades, although sugar free PEEPS® are no longer made.
They used to have wings! – Early PEEPS® chicks had wings, but they were removed to simplify mass production.
Colors galore – PEEPS® now come in yellow, pink, lavender, blue, green, orange, and white. Yellow remains the fan favorite. Fun fact: lavender was introduced in 1995, and blue joined the lineup in 1998.
They’ve gone gourmet – Chocolate-dipped PEEPS® arrived in 2010, and now they’re available in flavors like fruit punch, sour watermelon, lemon sherbet, blueberry, root beer, and even pancakes & syrup.
Calorie count – Each PEEP has 32 calories and zero fat.
Not everyone loves them – Believe it or not, there’s a Facebook group just for people who don’t like PEEPS®.
They’re not just for Easter – You can find PEEPS® for Halloween (pumpkins), Christmas (trees), and Valentine’s Day (hearts). But Easter still rules — 80% of all PEEPS® sold are chicks.
People get creative – Some PEEPS® fans eat them stale (on purpose!), others microwave them, freeze them, roast them like s’mores, or even top their pizza with them. (No judgment here.)
So next time you spot those bright marshmallow critters, remember: PEEPS® aren’t just candy — they’re a phenomenon.
