There has been an uptick recently regarding, "Oil Pulling". Some have heard of this and many have not. I've been researching this practice for a few years now and am convinced of the excellent benefits derived from doing this. As I do with these posts, I will discuss the positive benefits that I have received.
First, let's define what, "Oil Pulling" means. Quite simply, it is the practice of using an organic and pure oil like coconut or olive oil and placing it in your mouth while swishing it around for 5-10 minutes. After you have completed this, you either spit it out into a tissue or, simply spit it in a sink. Many believe the oils will clog drains so they opt for the tissue.
The benefits are believed to be whiter teeth, better oral health, healthier gums, helps with halitosis (bad breath), and assist with the body by binding and removing toxins. The science behind this is based on the molecules of the oil binding with toxins and pulling them out of your bloodstream. Because your mouth is loaded with capillaries, it is the first place where molecules are exchanged into your bloodstream.
I can tell you that I was not excited about trying this as it sounds gross. However, I can now say that after doing this for a few months now, I really do see the benefits. I chose to use a product that I trust as not all oils are pure, organic, and clean. You really do need to do your research on the oils you are buying for oil pulling or for use in your kitchen.
I like the lavender-flavored Arbequina Olive Oil I get from Oliveda. It tastes good and because it stays in my mouth for an extended amount of time, it is easier for me to tolerate. (And, this is not a sales pitch - any good oil source can be used). After researching the product I chose, this one met my qualifications.
I have experienced better oral health and have found that my gums are doing much better since I began oil pulling. I have a tendency to accidentally bite the side of my mouth and since I have started oil pulling, it has helped to calm down any soreness in my mouth. Overall, my teeth feel healthier too!
Give it a try! It isn't as bad as you may think. And, you might discover some great health benefits along the way.
