A tip for choosing timely blog post topics that people will really read and find

By
Real Estate Agent with Better Properties Seattle

I can't say that I have utilized this to its full advantage, but over on my blog I have a widget for a "stat counter" in the right sidebar.  Sorry to use a link instead of a "screen shot", but I'm terrible at screen shots.

Once you have access to the free Stat Counter (I'm sure there are others that you may already use) there should be an option for"

"RECENT KEYWORD ACTIVITY"  I'm pretty sure I have seen someone using this on an AR blog as well, so you should have access fairly easily and free to this type of information.

What this means is that you can see what words people used in Google to get to your blog.  What kinds of info were they looking for?  In some cases the post they are accessing (for me) is a couple of years old.  By having this information you can now write new posts with updated info on these same topics that are currently of interest to blog readers and potential clients.

Of course if you just want more hits, which is of some value, you can write on the more generic topcis that people seem to Google often and from everywhere, like "Pottery Barn Paint Colors" or "Bamboo Floring" or "Granite Countertips".  That will raise your hit count generally, and possibly your Google Raning as well.  But for garnering actual clients, you want to pay attention to the topics obviously searched by actual buyers and seller sin your area.

Here's a list of my recent keyword activity.  It's a great place to go fixhing for new ideas for blog posts because it's a good indicator of what people are really Googling for right now.

See "how to sell my house while buying a new one" and "King County Real Estate Monthly" from the list above.  I get 150 to 200 hits a day on this site, though all are not shown it still gives me a good idea each day if I'm looking for a timely and relevant post topic.

Market stats AND COMMENTARY on a regular basis help give me a good local following.  Broad topics give me a higher hit count.  Rarely to people comment...but they do email and call.  So keep your posts relevent and don't worry so much about comments.  Your keyword finder will show you that people are coming...and why they are coming, so you can spend more time on productive posts.

Ardell, I also use Statcounter and rely on them and the traffic they indicate on by blogs heavily.

I haven't attached it to my Active Rain blog.  If anyone has seen a tutorial regarding how to attach that to an AR blog, or can write such a post, can you put the link in the comments here?  Thanks.

I have had stat counter for about a year. I haven't gone on it lately but I use that key word feature sometimes and I like to see the map with all the red drops and if you click on them you can see where they are actually from and even sometimes the street they are located on..you can also see the IP address and the server they are on. I don't think its very accurate because I have seen hits in Nigeria and places all ove the world like Russia and I get lots of hits from England. Kind of interesting though.

Neal,

I have figured out a system for getting more local readers and less far away ones.  Very few of mine are from out of the Country and onsome days I can get as many as half to be local people by maneuvering the topics.

If you are getting so many from out of the Country, you may want to figure out why and stopping writing things that bring that type of activity.  I check mine very often and have increased my stats by doing so.

Ardell, I think Mike Jones told us about this in one of his posts awhile back, and he uses it on his AR blog....I think you've shown some good reasons to try it out. ;-)

Ardell, I too use my stats for blogging ideas.  I am surprised how many you have about paint - that is pretty funny.  And I really agree about not worrying about the comments.  People are reading & making decision based on what they read -  that is for sure.

Good post.  Just curious.  I use the stat counter on statcounter.com.  What do you use.  Just wondering if there is a better mousetrap.

Thanks Teri,

I know I've seen it on AR blogs, I just don't track the hits here as many would be from agents.

Rob,

Yes, I use Stat Counter.com

I'm sure there are others, but I don't think it really matters.  None capture all of the hits.  I like StatCounter better than some others because I have a pointer domain and I can track where the people are coming from from the pointer vs. the embedded domain.  Some others, like Alexa, show the hits only for the embedded domain which I rarely use as a reference, though it Googles well.

Ardell,

I check the key words people use and I am, frankly, often amazed at what words they are using when they stumble across me. Not what I would have guessed.

Great suggestion to simplify the process.  I never seem to think the way others using my site.  Not the majority of them any way.  I like anything that is automated.

Ardell,

Hey I'd take free housing in Seattle anyday.  It's a great city.

That could be a funny blog topic.  How to live for free in Seattle.  It would be dripping with sarcasm of course, but could be funny.

Melina,

I've never done well with sarcasm...I'm just too literal.  My daughter and her friend figured out how to live for free in Seattle for three years...it's called ARDELL's Lower Level :)  They just moved out because I'm putting the house on market.  I figured three years was enough.  Time for the little birds to find their own nests.  They are 22 and both have boyfriends.  I never charged either of them a dime.  They acquired decent jobs while living here and saved enough to get their own places.  It's great to be someone's leg-up.

I sent "the friend" a one way ticket here from L.A. and it was great watching her grow into a better person with higher self esteem.  I pretty much left them alone to figure the world out on their own, and they did a bang up job of it!

I want to own a 2nd home somewhere where I will eventually retire.  It could be CA.  I'd go to Florida, but I don't see that happening now that I've been on the WEST Coast of twelve years.  Kim thinks maybe Vegas where we can catch great shows.

For the next 5-7 years I want a place close enough to take off to more often and catch some sunshine in Winter.  I have two children in L.A. and one here at the moment.  A grand daughter in Hermosa Beach and my daughter here is due in December.  So splitting time betweenthe grandchildren would be my preference.

But of course, since I think the market will be going down for 3-5 years...I'll be waiting and watching :)  Selling now...not buying now.
