Saying Goodbye & Moving Forward

When it’s time to leave your home, it’s important to find closure. Each home holds special memories, from childhood to the moments you’ve shared with loved ones. As you prepare to move on, take a moment to remember the good times—the family gatherings, cozy evenings, and even the challenges that helped you grow.

Inviting your children or grandchildren to share stories can make saying goodbye easier for everyone. It’s okay to feel joy and sadness as you reflect on your experiences. Allow yourself to embrace these emotions fully; they show how much love has filled your home.

As you walk through each room, recall the laughter, cooking smells, and the conversations. While it’s difficult to say goodbye to such a meaningful place, hold onto the memories as you move forward. Celebrate those times and carry your love and lessons into your new chapter.

Hi Margaret I have often talked about this very subject with our sellers.  It's so important to find a  way to celebrate all the good and welcome in the new with loved ones.  The hardest one ever - was a lovely older couple that had lived on their mini horse ranch for over 50 years.  They were moving to an active adult carefree lifestyle home. The lady knew it beyond time but the husband did NOT want to leave his home.  It was tough.  And yes I could write a post about this one........lovely, lovely people.

I had a similar situation. Also, an older couple who owned a small farm moved to a condo, forcing them to give up their precious "kitty."  It was heartbreaking. That was before the emotional support animals.

Good afternoon Margaret,

It's so important to find a way to celebrate all the good and welcome in the new with loved ones in your home. I've been in my home 31 years and know it will be hard to say good-bye.

Celebrating the house and saying goodbye is necessary to move forward with your life. It's much more emotional than you ever thought!

In a sense, moving from our home filled with so many memories can leave us with a sense of mourning.  Taking the time to celebrate the time we lived and shared in our home, as well as saying goodbye and thanking the rooms and the home for the memories, may create a happy Goodbye, Miss Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400

I have observed that depression often affects those who never found closure.

Lew Corcoran,

I recommend taking the time to say goodbye to every seller. Most appreciate it and feel glad that someone understands the emotional turmoil. I could share a few stories about 'unexpected' reactions.

Many a tear is shed both at the house as the last of the possessions are carted away and also at the closing table.

Many of us have witnessed these tears, but few discuss and prepare for the emotional impact before moving.

Good morning, Margaret... I've never had an issue saying goodbye to a home. We've moved so much. But I've had issues saying goodbye to a city, especially Paris.

I have seen it on both sides; some sellers have a very difficult time letting go, while others can't wait to get out of there, haha.

We see that many of our buyers and sellers face more difficult circumstances when moving.

Nina Hollander, Broker,

Moving so many times, maybe you were conditioned that no place was forever. Leaving the city of Paris was a different kind of goodbye for you.

Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 this is the longest I've ever lived in one home (since May 2006) and the longest I've ever lived in one city consecutive years (May 1998). (I don't count NY City as growing up, as I had no choice in the matter.)

Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 I don't think I lived in any one place long enough to develop strong attachments. And even in my current home, where we've lived since 2006, while I love it, when the time comes to move on I won't be overly emotional.

Moving so often, is this the longest you've been in one house?

Some of us are still in our first and only home.

Margaret the time is starting to draw closer to when my wife and I will have to say good-bye to our home of 44 years.  It is the only home both my boys have known, and it will be interesting to see what it will be like when the inevitable day finally comes.
