Protecting Canyon Creek: Let's Get Wildfire Ready Together

With the heartbreaking wildfires in California fresh on everyone’s minds, it’s more important than ever to stay vigilant and proactive, especially here in Canyon Creek, where we’re surrounded by the beautiful but fire-prone Balcones Canyonlands.

Last night, I attended a community wildfire awareness meeting hosted by our Canyon Creek HOA Board at Peace Lutheran Church. I’m so grateful to our board for organizing this vital event and bringing in Chris Dibrell from the Austin Fire Department’s Wildfire Division as our featured speaker.

Chris delivered a powerful and eye-opening presentation, reminding us that no home in Canyon Creek is immune to wildfire risk, not just those backing up to the greenbelt.

One of the most startling facts he shared: 90% of homes that ignite during a wildfire do so from ember cast, not direct flames. Embers can travel over a mile, making every home vulnerable.

I’ve already signed up for my evaluation—have you?

Another key takeaway: Every household needs a Wildfire Action Plan, the Ready, Set, Go! model. Central Texas made headlines during the devastating 2011 Labor Day fires, and it’s a sobering reminder that wildfires are not just a West Coast problem—they’re a year-round threat right here in our backyard.

Let’s be proactive. Let’s be prepared. And let’s do it together.

Canyon Creek neighbors, don’t wait. Take action now to protect your home and our community. Scan the QR code below to schedule your free home evaluation and learn more about how we can stand strong against wildfire, together.

Thank you for sharing Dorie Dillard Austin TX   We have had many wildfires in Nebraska this year and most of the bad ones have been controlled fires that got away from whomever had the burn permit OR arson.  It is so hard on the wildlife.  Have a great weekend!

Dorie, this is a great idea, as we are seeing fires all over, not just the west anymore.

Dorie- I am so happy that you attended the Wildfire Preparedness Meeting. We think of these fires on the West Coast but they can happen around the country. When we were in Central FL there were fires and on more than one occasion we had to take a detour from our usual route back to Delray Beach.

Central Texas is in a prone area for wildfires so I'm so glad our CC HOA is being proactive. The Balcones Canyonland surrounds our community Kathy Streib

This is a very important thing to take care of. Our road just got a grant to do fire mitigation - we pay up front and then 75% of the costs are returned when the project is complete. We are meeting with contractors now who would do the removal of trees and brush. That's the one negative about living here in Montana - fire danger.

Oh wow, Dorie... something I'd never even thought about. This is great information to get out to your neighbors to protect themselves in the event of fires. We've learned only too well how devastating these fires can be.

It's good to be prepared for something like this, but hopefully you never have to deal with it firsthand at your own home.

Dorie I am fortunate to live in an area where we have never had a wildfire, but if we were prone to them I would make sure I knew what to do and be prepared.

Dorie this is such an important topic.  We too are prone to wildfires living in the desert and right next to a Mountain Preserve.  We all very aware of keeping our yard free from dead trees or debris as our most of our neighbors.  The city has asked all of us to 'report' anyone who doesn't take down dead trees.  We had one neighbor with 3 or 4 really big DEAD pine trees that the city make her take down immediately.  That could have really created havoc for the whole area had lightening sriked....

Many of us are not well prepared for emergency events. Your blog post is a good reminder.

Hi Dorie:

This is such important information for homeowners to be aware of, and prepared for. Wildfires are becoming more and more prevalent all the time...and not just here in California. The impact here on the insurance industry has been significant.

Good morning Dorie. You don't have to close to the fire to be a victim of the fire! One ember is all it takes to potentially wipe you out. A little attention to a once of prevention is essential. Great post. Enjoy your day.
