With the heartbreaking wildfires in California fresh on everyone’s minds, it’s more important than ever to stay vigilant and proactive, especially here in Canyon Creek, where we’re surrounded by the beautiful but fire-prone Balcones Canyonlands.
Last night, I attended a community wildfire awareness meeting hosted by our Canyon Creek HOA Board at Peace Lutheran Church. I’m so grateful to our board for organizing this vital event and bringing in Chris Dibrell from the Austin Fire Department’s Wildfire Division as our featured speaker.

Chris delivered a powerful and eye-opening presentation, reminding us that no home in Canyon Creek is immune to wildfire risk, not just those backing up to the greenbelt. One of the most startling facts he shared: 90% of homes that ignite during a wildfire do so from ember cast, not direct flames. Embers can travel over a mile, making every home vulnerable. |
I’ve already signed up for my evaluation—have you?
Another key takeaway: Every household needs a Wildfire Action Plan, the Ready, Set, Go! model. Central Texas made headlines during the devastating 2011 Labor Day fires, and it’s a sobering reminder that wildfires are not just a West Coast problem—they’re a year-round threat right here in our backyard.
Let’s be proactive. Let’s be prepared. And let’s do it together.
