Friday Fun…Would You Rather..

The relationships we form at ActiveRain are immeasurable. This platform was built on information shared and the members.

Despite changes in ownership and a real estate market that has brought many to their knees, the community keeps ActiveRain alive.

Through your posts and comments, we learn about you and your community.

Writing a post takes time. Responding to comments made on your post and commenting on the posts of others takes time as well. And time…whether you’re in full working mode or retired…is precious.

So chime in for Friday Fun…

~Do you try to respond to comments on your post?

~Do you respond to comments as well as comment on the posts of others?

~Do you comment on some if you feel like you have something to say

~Do you take the “tit for tat” mode and only respond/comment if the other person does the same to you?

My answer?

I reply to comments on my posts and also comment on others'. It’s not perfect, though, because life gets in the way.

Though tempted, I try not to play the tit for tat game of not commenting if you do not comment on my posts

Good morning Kathy. Given the speed of the platform lately may have to rethink my approach since time has a value. That said I can't fully imagine the frustration Development must be feeling trying to speed things up.

I try to comment to about 20 to 25+ posts of others daily. Without doubt those who play my trivia series likely get preference but not "tit for tat" in the approach.

I am not great at responding to all comments on my posts but I try given time.

Enjoy your day here in the Rain.

Wayne Martin I try very hard to respond to comments on my post but those that come in overnight, I may not get to.

Hello Kathy - the world evolves, and AR follows that theme.  So have I in some ways.  It has been interesting to see.   Admittedly, it is a wonder that the lights continue to remain on.  Flickering as it may be - and that's a "word" that is appropriate.

And speaking of appropriate - what "works" for me may not be what is a part of each member's reason for being here.  Who am I to say. . .

Michael Jacobs I agree with everything you said. I've always said there is no right or wrong way here. It depends on what you hope to get by being here.

Hi Kathy,
For me, AR is about building relationships, which requires meaningful back-and-forth communication. We all know who the ones are who comment just for the points.

I don't have a tit-for-tat attitude, but I do spend most of my time on those who seem to feel the same way.

Carol Williams There are times when I'm "commented-out"  I don't go "tit for tat" but often lose interest if someone never engages.

I respond to comments on my posts, I used to comment on that person's latest post, now due to time not always.  I do read and comment on those posts in my feed and will sometimes go looking for a post by someone I enjoy reading, but am always surprised how many I miss when I read your weekly round up.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 I appreciate your responses to comments on your post. I'll often comment on listings and market reports as a way a thanking someone for commenting on my posts.

Kathy I try to comment everyday on the blogs of the members I follow, and then some other members is the topic catches my eye.  At one time I would respond to every comment someone made on my blog, BUT as time became more of a challenge, I only reply if I feel a response is needed.

George Souto I hear you!  I appreciate any comments on my post but I don't "take a roll call" to see who did and didn't comment.

Kathy, it has been DIFFICULT to make any comments.  Yesterday I made 5 or 6 and took AN HOUR.   I gave up.   I am busy right now, and don't have time for the waiting.    I do respond to those who comment on my posts, eventually, and comment on others that have new listings, but know they never interact.

Joan Cox I get it. It took me a while to get on today. When I run into that, I move on.

From day one AR was about building relationships and networking with fellow professionals.  Still is to this day.  And absolutely I reply to comments on my posts - when I get the chance to write them lately.  As for the 'tit for tat'  idea - honestly I've always thought that was quite childish.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten I enjoy the interaction here. I love learning from the other members as well. I don't do the tit-for-tat thing either because yes...it's childish. That said, if someone doesn't appear to want to engage here, that's ok.

Hi Kathy:

I try to respond to all comments on my posts, and also comment regularly on posts of those I follow, although time sometimes gets in the way of consistency. I'm not in the tit for tat frame of mind and it's fine if I comment but someone doesn't comment in return.

Good afternoon Kathy,

I try and comment on those who have commented on my posts and definitely try a get in at least 20 comments on other's post. However life does get in the way and I may not get it all done, especially with the slowness of AR lately. If I comment on someone's post and never see them commenting on mine at some point the relationship is one sided so may come to an end.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX I agree. It was hard getting on today but there's always something else to do. Life, family, work take precedence.

Scott Schulte That's the thing...there are no rules other than what's in the Community Guidelines. Everyone handles comments etc, differently and that's ok. Many of us like the back and forth of making comments because it's how we get to know someone.

Kathy, your "Would You Rather" post touches on the heart of community engagement on ActiveRain! It's interesting to see the different approaches members take to responding and commenting. Your philosophy of engaging because life gets in the way, but generally reciprocating, seems to strike a good balance. It's a thoughtful way to foster connections without getting bogged down in a tit-for-tat mentality.
