Friday Flags: Half Mast Out of Respect for a Pope

I paused a few seconds to give a thought as to why the flags were at half-mast and then realized in a state with such a strong Catholic population the respect for the head of the Catholic Church.

Pope Francis, the first Cardinal elected to head the church born in the Americas.

Born in Argentina,  to Italian immigrants,  Jorge Mario Bergoglio was a very sympathetic and an advocate for the poor.

He will lie in state through the weekend and his funeral will be next week. Once the funeral is over the college of Cardinals will assemble and begun the process of finding and electing a successor.

Rest in peace pope Francis!!! One of the most outspoken popes in recent years especially when it comes humanity and treatment of underserved people across the world and elimination of hate

Sham Reddy CRS   He was not like the rest, and it will be interesting to see how he gets replaced since he was not a typical person .

I am not sad for the Pope, I think he is where God wants him to be, and I have a feeling that he is in a really good place!

It is good to see the decision for the flags to be at half staff in honor of the Pope.

Ed, that was sad to hear about Pope Francis, but he has been in bad health.   I was lucky to see his church in Buenos Aires last year.

Honoring the Pope by flying our flags half mask.  I haven't seen that here but I just might today when I'm out and about.  I grew up Catholic so I understand the importance of all of this.....and the reverence millions of people have for the Pope/

hi Ed- I first noticed the flags at half mast on our walk at Kickerillo then saw them everywhere else. It's a nice sign of respect for the position.

Hi Ed,
I haven't seen any flags at half-mast, but maybe I just haven't noticed them. I’ve been watching some of the interviews with church leaders who speculate that the next Pope might be someone who pushes back a bit on some of the progressive moves made under Pope Francis.

Apr 26, 2025 09:10 AM
Ed Silva, 203-206-0754

Carol Williams   That would not surprise me as he was far more liberal than most.

He wanted to make the child abusers and their bishops accountable.

Wanted to recognize same sex marriage etc

They were at half mast here in San Diego, I'm sure there will be those that cry "separation of church and state" but I appreciated the respectful gesture.

Ed, You don’t have to agree with all his views to recognize the respect the Pope deserves and I did see this during my weekend drives.

I've always liked the tradition of honoring someone who has passed on by lowering the flags to half mast Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 BUT in most cases I think it goes on for to many days.
