The Founder’s Oak: Auburn’s Majestic Symbol of Strength, Heritage, and Home
This Historic Tree in Auburn Has Stood Strong for 175+ Years
When you think about Auburn, Alabama, it’s impossible not to think about its deep roots — both in history and in nature. One of the most breathtaking reminders of Auburn’s spirit stands tall at the heart of Auburn University’s Davis Arboretum: the Founder’s Oak.
As a local realtor who knows Auburn inside and out — right down to its most beautiful trees — I can’t help but pause every time I pass by this incredible piece of living history. It’s more than just a tree; it’s a symbol of resilience, tradition, and the vibrant spirit that makes Auburn such a special place to live.
Planted around 1850, just six years before Auburn University (originally East Alabama Male College) was founded, this majestic Post Oak has witnessed nearly two centuries of life in our community. The Founder’s Oak has earned recognition as a historic site by the Alabama Historical Association, and it proudly stands across from the President’s Mansion on Garden Drive. Measuring 88 feet tall, almost 90 feet wide, and boasting a trunk diameter of over 47 inches, it’s impossible not to be in awe of its grand presence.
Through every storm — even weathering Hurricane Eloise in 1975 — the Founder’s Oak has remained strong, a living testament to Auburn’s enduring character. It is expected to stand tall well into the next century, continuing to inspire generations of students, residents, and visitors who walk the Auburn campus each year.
