Does Your Current Home Fit Your Retirement Needs?

Retirement is a new chapter of life—one that brings with it more time to relax, pursue hobbies, travel, or simply enjoy the company of friends and family. But it also prompts an important question: Does your current home still meet your needs?

For many retirees, the answer is no—and that's okay. As we move into this season of life, what once worked may no longer make sense. Perhaps the two-story colonial with a large yard that served your family well for decades now feels too large or physically challenging to manage. Or maybe you’re finding that upkeep and maintenance are eating up too much of your time and energy.

The right home for your retirement years should offer comfort, accessibility, and peace of mind. For example, features like single-level living, wider doorways, walk-in showers, and fewer stairs can make daily living easier and safer as we age. If mobility ever becomes an issue, a well-designed home can make a big difference in maintaining independence.

Beyond layout and design, location matters too. Are you close to family and friends? Is healthcare readily accessible? Do you feel connected to your community, or has the neighborhood changed? You may want to consider an active senior community that offers lots of amenities. These factors are all part of a bigger picture that impacts your quality of life.

Finances also come into play. Downsizing may not only reduce your monthly expenses, but it could also free up equity that you can use to support your retirement lifestyle. That dream vacation, helping the grandkids with college, or simply feeling more financially secure—these are all potential benefits of making a move.

If you’re starting to wonder whether your home still fits your life, you’re not alone. Take time to reflect on your current and future needs. Talk to a real estate professional who understands the unique considerations of retirement living. Sometimes, the perfect home for this stage isn’t the one you’re in—it’s the one waiting just around the corner.

Good evening Barbara,

Great post because there are so many moving into retirement and for many their home doesn't work for them for many reasons. Its a good time to reflect on your needs and see if a change makes sense for you in your housing needs.

Hi Dorie, Its better to make plans to move when someone can handle the stress involved. Waiting too long before a move is necessary can take a toll on your health.

Hi Lew, There are many factors to consider when relocating and it's best to do that while someone is able to make the move and enjoy their next chapter..

When we bought our home, we definitely had retirement in mind. One level living with just 3 steps and we can stay here until we just don't want this much space or privacy.

Hi Ed, We also moved to a one level home recently with the plan to age in place and enjoy a closer proximity to our family.

Hello Barbara - as our lives evolve, where we live may change as well.  Or it can adjust and adapt in numerous ways.  Decisions never stop as long as life goes on.

Hi Michael, The key to success is to make the adjustment at the right time once it's determined that a change is in our best interest.

Hi Brian, As we age, there may be some considerations that should be made for our safety and comfort. Can we age in place or is it better to move to a more age appropriate living arrangement.
