Catonsville, MD District 1 Redistricting
If you live in Academy Heights, Paradise, Dunmore, Charlestown, Maiden Choice Elementary, Western Tech, Westgate, Overbrook, Medwick Garth, or Westowne Elementary neighborhoods of Catonsville/Baltimore County, you need to pay close attention and speak up to have your concerns heard.
Baltimore County is about to be redistricted, and we are about to be removed from Councilmanic District 1 and assigned to District 2, centered along the Liberty Road corridor. This move undermines our community's political influence and weakens our ability to advocate for the needs of our neighborhoods. Our community leadership strongly encourages our voters to reach out to the Councilmanic Redistricting Committee and voice your opposition.
Removing these neighborhoods from District 1 breaks the historic connection to Catonsville and Arbutus’ sustainable community designations, key transportation routes (Frederick, Wilkins, and Edmondson Avenues), and the coordinated master planning process that guides responsible growth.
Dividing Catonsville and Arbutus also weakens the political power of communities remaining in District 1, especially north of Route 40, making it harder for all of us to advocate effectively for improvements and resources.
Communities adjacent to the Baltimore City line face unique challenges that require focused, unified representation. Dividing these responsibilities between two districts impedes meaningful revitalization efforts from succeeding.
Councilmanic districts must be contiguous and compact. The proposed map does not meet this standard. It disregards long-standing neighborhood alignments, major transportation corridors, and planning guidelines vital for smart growth.
