A Blooming Business - Some Secrets Never Go Out of Season

A huge thank you to Eileen Burns 954.483.3912 & Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 for hosting this month's fun challenge! We're loving reading the entries and seeing the incredible creativity of our AR community. Here's my small contribution!

When I think about a blooming business, I don’t just picture dollar signs or a packed schedule. I see something totally different - something alive — thriving, changing with the seasons but, deeply rooted in the right soil. 🌸 Every year, I find myself reflecting on what it really takes to not just grow but, to bloom — in business, in life and in all the little spaces in between.

The secret? It's really not a single big, flashy thing. It’s the small, consistent things - consistent habits that no algorithm, no social media guru or or no overnight trend could ever replace.

Here’s what I’ve learned — and what keeps my business in full bloom year after year:

🌱 Plant Seeds Every Day: Relationships are seeds. Trust is a seed. Expertise is a seed. Every conversation, every note sent, every problem solved is a quiet investment that pays off when you least expect it.

☀️ Stay in the Sun: Positivity isn’t naive; it’s fuel. Staying optimistic — even when the market wobbles or a deal falls through — keeps your energy magnetic. Clients feel it. I feel they’re drawn to it as well.

💧 Water Your Roots: I never stop learning. I read, I listen, I sharpen my skills like my livelihood depends on it — because it does. The market evolves, technology changes, people's needs shift. I believe that staying curious, keeps me relevant.

🌸 Grow Toward the Light: Levity is my superpower. There’s not a transaction so serious that it can’t be made better with a little humor, a little grace and a reminder that we’re all human beings, doing life together.

🌻 Bloom Where You’re Planted: Charlotte is my home, my heartbeat, and my community. Knowing where you are — really knowing it — gives you roots that are impossible to fake. That authenticity shines through every handshake, every deal, every closing table hug.

The truth is, no matter how much technology speeds up or the world spins sideways, the core ingredients stay the same: kindness, hustle, humor, expertise, and gratitude. Water those every day, and the blooms will come — year after year, in every season.

Here’s to businesses that don’t just grow — they flourish. 🌼

Steve Shatsky and I did a presentation about 'farming' in Seattle at an AR Camp one year - referencing harvesting, deep roots, etc. I've always loved that analogy for building business! Blooms make me smile, Eileen Burns 954.483.3912! Thank you again for hosting - what a GREAT challenge! 🌸

Good morning, Debe.
Being from an area heavily dependent on agriculture, I always appreciate a horticultural analogy to growing and operating a business. We can't reap without sowing.

Apr 30, 2025 06:45 AM
Debe Maxwell, CRS

Same here, Carol Williams - perhaps that is why I tend to reference horticulture in business! You certainly do have a great point - we must sow to reap!

The thing with gardening is you are never really finished, you can always tweek a little with a new plant or some pruning to improve the shrubs that are already growing. So, I love this analogy, thank you for your entry to the challenge this month.

I was just telling Ray last night how much I've gotten done outdoors this year and how little it seems I did get done, Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543!! It's a labor of love though - I LOVE getting my hands dirty and watching those little seedlings spring into gorgeous blooms.

Thank you again for hosting - you guys did a fantastic job!

Hello Debe - maintaining a garden can be seen as akin to cultivating relationships in everyday life.  Or producing a real estate practice too.  Some approaches may seem to be haphazard at best while others are examples that are admired.  Up close and from afar. Such observations remain interesting.

Debe Maxwell, CRS

Your comment speaks to me, Michael Jacobs! While I absolutely love what I do, retirement will bring me even more cultivation of old relationships in my personal life. I've focused on business FAR too much more than building relationships - i.e. here in the Rain. It will be fun to have the opportunity to spend more time here!

The older I get, the more important I find it to keep the "weedy" people out of my gardens.  I love interacting with the positive perennial types such as yourself :)

Aww and I feel the same, Liz and Bill Spear! I love your 'weedy" people analogy too and could not agree more!!

Debe good comparison.  Planting and growing a garden, has a lot in common to starting and growing a business.  Both need to be nurtured and cared for every day.

YES! I remember thinking how easy it would be starting in this business, George Souto! I had a dear friend/BIC who knows everyone in all of NC! I expected to get LOTS of leads from him. Yeah, how lucky I was that he didn't - it helped me start planting and growing my business!

Debe, your "Blooming Business" analogy is so vivid and true! The idea that consistent small actions, like planting seeds of relationships and watering them with expertise, are what truly make a business thrive resonates deeply. Your secrets – planting daily, staying positive, continuous learning, and blooming where you're planted – are timeless and universally applicable. It's a beautiful reminder that the core of success is often found in these fundamental practices.
