You git what you pay for...

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Retired Broker/Owner AZ Broker BR030809000

Yup that's right you heard me right!  You git what you pay for!  The other day I was in desperate need of a hair trim after months and months of not being able to get it done. My usual gal is booked at least 2 months in advance and she's worth it.  BUT this time I simply couldn't wait any longer.

Mr Gary drove me over to the nearest 'quick cut hair shops' and I got right in.  The stylist was as nice and chatty as could be.  And I thought all was going well.  But after I took a shower I realized it just didn't have the high quality cut I was used to.  But hey, I got what I paid for. How much? would you believe $16.00?  As in no kidding!  I paid more for hair cuts 40 years ago!   That got me to wondering just how do these type of shops manage to make money.  Perhaps it's a quick turn around - you know - clients in and out fast.  I bet that's it  Have you ever gone to one of those quick hair cute shops?  Did you git what you paid for?

Then it came to my mind that the same is true in real estate.  Home sellers and buyers git what they pay for.  If they hire a top notch, expert and listen to their advice, well, you know how that goes.  But if they hire someone who has no real idea of the market or how to market properties etc etc.....but it's cheaper.  Well...they git what they pay for.  Short and to the point. Lesson Over! Done!

Get out there and make it a Tude Day!

Hi Anna... great analogy and I've often said to clients and prospective clients that you do what you pay for in real estate.

As for those quickie hair cut place... no way, no how! Nothing I fear more than having to spend 4-6 weeks of bad hair days because of a bad hair cut!

It's so true Nina Hollander, Broker!  Hire the best I say!  And as for this haircut......at least it's out of my eyes!! I had to make it a jump in and jump out cut as that was all I could handle.  But....next time!  No thanks!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten  My top hairdresser cut my hair one day, and I had no idea what had happened. All the layers I had grown out were now back, and every time I looked in the mirror, I was upset. I told her about it on my next appointment,

It was time to find a new hairdresser. Someone who was going to listen and was experienced. She seemed too busy for me. My hair was long, and we had cut it in that style. She had forgotten and was too busy that day, and just started cutting.

Ensure the agent has time for you and will not hand you over to an assistant, but will listen to you. You got away cheap, I am still waiting for mine to grow back, but luckily found a fantastic hairdresser to fix it and always has time for me  ---  Love your analogy

Yes I hear you Hannah Williams! On occasion I've had that experience of the hairdresser not listening or talking about all kinds of other nonsense going on in her life.  No thanks!  I'm glad you found a new one that could help you out and make your hair make sense once again!  Some stylist are just so darn good....and that's who we want on our team.  That goes for real estate as well!

PS When I asked how much I owed I couldn't believe he said $16.00!  That still boggles my mind.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten the same hair stylist has been cutting my hair for the last 44 years.   For a men's hair cut, wash and style he is pricey, BUT he does an excellent job, and worth every penny to me.

Hey George Souto you guys have it so much simpler!  Gary has been going to the same place for years.....and he's bald!  But he loves the service they give.  44 years is a long time......WOW!  I think the longest one I had was about 15 and he was  so good and then he retired.

Goo afternoon Anna,

I'm glad you got in and got a haircut! Even if it wasn't like your regular gal it got the job done and your hair is out of your eyes. Great analogy with real estate and we have to keep in mind when we aren't available this can happen and we loose a client. Maybe not for good but for a small deal maybe. You git what you pay for!

Hi Dorie Dillard Austin TX thanks!  At least it's no so wild looking! There was nothing I could do to tame it down!   As you well know, paying attention to clients and giving them top notch service is our goal......many of us.  Others, not so much.  Pretty easy to spot the difference.!

Thanks for sharing this fun and honest story, Anna "Banana" Kruchten. I love how you tie it all together—sometimes paying a little more really does get you a lot more in the end! Grateful for your perspective and the reminder that quality is worth the investment. 💇‍♀️💸

Hi Lew Corcoran as I mentioned a few times I was flabbergasted by it costing only $16!! Reminded me of those low cost agents that offer 'menu' pricing....I'm sure you've got some in your area.

My Mom so drilled that into my head growing up.....it's about quality Anna.  I am certain I never heard her say......you git what you pay for!

Hi, Anna "Banana" Kruchten. There’s a quote by John Ruskin you may want to remember:

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do.

"The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

I've committed it to memory.

That's is for sure Joan Cox!   I shudder to think about that and how it go so quickly go off the rails for sellers and buyers.  I've heard some doozie stories over  the years.

Hi Anna:

I think "you git what you pay for" is a good analogy for many things...real estate as well as life in general.

I so agree Jeff Dowler, CRS !   Lately I could say this about a few restaurants......quality and service has gone down but prices are higher.  We just don't go back there anymore after several times of hoping it would be excellent again.  And they're not busy as they used to be.  I sure would be paying attention to this if I was the owner/manager.

Well done, Anna- I'm usually a very tolerant consumer except when it comes to my hair. Many years ago the stylist I'd gone to for years was cutting my hair. Another stylist came by and asked him if he'd like to look at the back again.

Turns out he must have been on drugs... I had to wear a headband for over a month!

You do get what you pay for although I agree...lately with rising prices in some restaurants, I feel as  if we aren't getting anywhere near what we paid for.

Holy smokes Kathy Streib you had to wear a headband for over 2 months.  That is hairy mess by a long shot.....

Yes indeed, this is true of any kind of service, and any kind of product. We sure do git what we pay for!

I brought my kids to those quick haircut places and yes, they must make money on volume. It wasn't due to quality.

Hi Kat Palmiotti it makes sense for kids probably.  And I think so.....it's got to be volume rather than quality.  That's another post unto itself!

Hello, Miss Anna "Banana" Kruchten I did go to one of those 'quick cut hair shops' once to get my head shaved as it was falling out due to chemo.

Years later, I did it again on live TV in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

Hi Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist I remember you doing that for charity.  A dear friend of mine had to have her head shaved and she absolutely looked fabulous with a shaved head! Sadly she didn't make it through her illness.  I can still hear her laughter and love of life to this day.  You would have loved her!

Hi Anna,

I can totally relate to the hairstylist experience. I had almost the same experience, even though I didn't go to the $16 one, but it still wasn't what I would have liked it to be. I have been going to the same super wonderful hairstylist for almost a decade now, and we don't even talk about hair any more - she knows.

When I find a great service provider, I stick to them.

Yes, I can not blame the barber for my heredity baldness. You would think they could find a real solution as opposed to the snake oil they have been peddling for years. Believe me none of them work.

Good morning Anna. When I lived in the city I paid city prices for a haircut. And, they could not control the "hockey curl" thing I had gong in the back. We moved to the far suburbs and I found a barber my age plus, and you know I an old. He had a low price and told me he cut hair his way or no way, take your choice. I took the chance. He is less than half the price, cash only, and guess what I no longer have a hockey curl.

What an exception to the rule. I am getting more than I am paying for. And, that has not happened to me before. Enjoy your day.

May 04, 2025 05:15 AM
Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Hey Wayne Martin could it be because you're out of the city price zone?  that happens here as well.   I hear what people pay in smaller towns and apparently they can do so as it's lower cost of living?

Anna "Banana" Kruchten - you reminded me about the time I really needed to get my hair cut but couldn't get in for a quick appointment to a reputable place I liked. I was so determined that I popped into one of those Walk-In joints. I was told I'd have wait for about 10 minutes. I agreed. But as I was waiting, something caught my attention from the corner of my eye. I jumped up, and walked out of the store. I did not get my hair cut that day.
