The Case of the Elephant Bush: I Swear I Didn’t Plant It!

By

You know you’re a true Woodbridge Irvine homeowner when you get a formal letter accusing you of guerrilla gardening… with a succulent.

Truth is, I barely noticed the plant—just a little Portulacaria afra (known as Elephant Bush or Dwarf Jade Plant) quietly doing its thing just outside my gate. It had been growing there for years, blending right into the landscaping. Then the HOA sent me a letter stating:

“It has been reported by Management that there are homeowner plants in common area. This is a violation of the governing documents.”

Apparently, I was now the prime suspect. The letter kindly informed me that I needed to remove it - because obviously, when in doubt, blame the homeowner!

Now here’s where it gets interesting: Elephant Bush happens to be native to South Africa. And yes, I’m originally from South Africa too. Coincidence? I’d like to think so. But maybe the HOA figured the dots connected a little too perfectly. For the record, I haven’t even visited South Africa in over 20 years… and if I had been smuggling plants, I promise I would’ve chosen something flashier. 😄

Let me just say - I actually like drought-tolerant succulents, but this one wasn’t mine. Elephant Bush is a survivor. It can root and thrive from a single fallen leaf. It could’ve arrived courtesy of wind, wildlife, or maybe a helpful (but mysterious) neighbor.

That said, I understand the HOA’s position. Their job is to maintain the appearance and value of our beautiful Woodbridge neighborhood, and I’m all for that. I complied and removed the plant - though I was tempted to leave a little sign that said:

“Native of South Africa. Not necessarily planted by one.”

Only in Irvine real estate can a succulent spark a full-blown investigation. 🌿

And if you're ever navigating a tricky HOA notice, a plant-based misunderstanding, or just looking to buy or sell a home in Woodbridge, I'm always here to help. You can explore current Woodbridge homes for sale right here.

Debbie, this "Case of the Elephant Bush" is such a fun and relatable story for Woodbridge homeowners! Your humorous take on the HOA's "guerrilla gardening" accusation and the South Africa connection is delightful. It perfectly captures the quirks of community living and the occasional plant-based misunderstandings. Your willingness to comply while still injecting humor is a great way to handle these situations. It's a charming reminder that even in Irvine real estate, a little succulent can lead to an amusing tale!

Hi Debbie- "guilt by association!"   I've planted succulents and I can verify that one leaf can take root almost anywhere thanks to the wind, and critters relocating it!  What a cute story.

Maybe a jealous neighbor wanted one and when they couldn't get it, they turned you in. Poison ivy grows just as mysteriously.

Ha ha, right, Ed?! I should’ve offered cuttings to the whole block. That might’ve avoided the whole thing! 😂🌿 Actually, I’ve got the coolest neighbors ever. Thanks for reading!

Hello Debbie - like practicing real estate, living in a HOA can show you things you might not imagine.  Stories like this continue to confirm the reality of both.

Fun story - although a bummer. I love Elephant Bush and grow it at my house.

My HOA back in the day sent me a letter 4 months after I moved in to my townhouse, stating I must remove the Ficus Tree in my yard.

Do you mean the one that was there when I bought the place? The one, based on it's size, that has been there for about 3 years? OK.

Well, I showed them. Before I cut it down, I propagated about 3 branches, turning them into potted trees, which over time when from a branch in a pot of soil to 6 foot tall potted trees.

1.4 years later - guess what? Yep! Another letter. Please remove the Ficus Trees from your yard, they violate the HOA rules for planting trees in your garden.

I shredded their letter, put the scarps back in an envelope with a nice phot of the potted plants, not planted trees 😉 and mailed it back to them. I never heard from them again on this issue.😂

Ha ha ha, Thomas. I love that you outsmarted the system with your potted-tree workaround! And didn’t just destroy the Ficus. In my neighborhood, the HOA actually does a perimeter inspection before escrow closes, so my HOA would've had your sellers remove that Ficus before you even moved in! 😅

I'm wondering, if it was in common space, why didn't they just remove it themselves?

Great story! Thank you for sharing.

Right?! I wondered the same thing, Kat 🙃 But hey, I decided to pick my battles. Honestly, the HOA does a good job overall ….. just had to laugh at this one! 😄 Thanks for reading, and commenting, Kat!

I was thinking what Kat Palmiotti was thinking!  It if was common area that should be part of the HOA landscape crew to monitor!  I'm thinking of a neighborhood close to us that has a 'interesting' HOA issue going on now and I sure feel for my friends that live in that community.   Great story Debbie!

Thanks Anna! Agreed!!! You’d think the landscape crew would've noticed it sometime over the past few years! 😂 Hope your friends’ HOA drama settles down soon  …… never a dull moment in these communities!

Hi Debbie.....don't think their HOA issue will settle down anytime soon as it's a huge project that must be done.  They put it off for years apparently and now they all have to pay.  Re-build the community pool.  Close to 200K was the estimate. Which for a small community is a big deal.  Who knows what they'll do.....

Debbie,
I actually drove by your yard this morning and I regret to inform you that your grass is a 1/8th inch too tall. Pay no attention to the numbers on my tape measure as I can assure you that it is the same tape measure certified for use by the HOA!

What a fun way Debbie shared this information regarding the Elephant Plant outside the fence where she lives. In many ways, I am not surprised at Woodbridge making such an issue, as this tells who they are. Yet, her humor is a great way to handle matters like this.  Never would I think a little succulent could lead to an amusing tale! Elephants do have the freedom to walk where they choose, so just maybe they are leaving their print to show they are not to be forgotten, and they may leave their mark all over Irvine🐘.

Bobi, your comment absolutely made my day! 🥰 You always have such a thoughtful (and delightfully poetic!) way of looking at things. I love your take on the elephants leaving their mark all over Irvine ……  it made me smile.

Thank you for reading and for your kind words. It means a lot coming from a neighbor and dear friend like you. Let’s hope Woodbridge doesn’t need an official Elephant Bush policy anytime soon! 🐘😉
