Flower Mart - May 2-3, 2025
Flower Mart was founded in 1911 by the Women’s Civic League, an organization formed to advocate for better living conditions in the City of Baltimore. A focal point of the original market was to encourage flower, plant, and vegetable gardening in the yards of homes and vacant lots—thereby making them green.
The Women’s Civic League managed the event for almost ninety years. Along the way the festival’s signature Lemon Stick treat was introduced—which is made by inserting a porous peppermint stick used as a “straw” into a halved lemon to suck the juice out of a halved lemon—sweety and tangy—and very refreshing.
With the formation of the Mount Vernon Place Conservancy, and its role in managing the Washington Monument and the park squares of Mount Vernon Place, in 2019 the Conservancy took over the management of Flower Mart.
The Conservancy believes that the mission of Flower Mart is as relevant today in 2025 as it was in 2011. The Conservancy focuses the event on local vendors, particularly those who make and grow their own products and they have also added educational activities, offering learning opportunities regarding the value of urban green spaces and gardens.
Flower Mart takes place at Mount Vernon Place, 699 Washington Place, Baltimore, MD 21201, from 11 am to 8 pm
