If I Were to Restart My Real Estate Career, How Would That Look?

By
Real Estate Agent with Cummings & Co. Realtors

The ActiveRain May 2025 Challenge is about a career do-over. If I were to start my career all over again, how would that look? What would I do differently?

The interesting twist to this would be that this do-over would come in the current time - meaning, with today's tools, and having the knowledge from lessons learned and tested, what has worked and not.

It's funny, because I already had an idea in my head, and then I read Tammy Lankford, 's post, and one of the things she wrote was, "There are a couple of clients that I simply wouldn't have worked with. "

This struck me hard, as I realized that is exactly the key as to what I would have changed if I had a chance to start over.

Sometimes people are not a great fit to work together. It can sometimes lead to frustrations for both parties. I wish I had known that sometimes people don't mesh, and it is OK to let that potential business go. It would have saved a lot of headaches, some heartache, and would have been better for everyone involved.

I wasted so much time and energy on some clients, when once releasing them, I felt such relief. I am sure they felt a sense of relief on their end as well.

If I were to go back in time and start my real estate career over, I would allow myself to say "no" more often. Claim my personal time. And definitely let myself fire clients before things get to the point where I am not sleeping due to stress over them or the situation.

Thank you for the challenge, Carol Williams and Margaret Rome!

Hello Marney - the power of NO is that it can be redefined as Next Opportunity.  In real estate and throughout much of everyday life.

People make the business. People have personalities.  Sometimes, the people are just not a good working fit.  Freedom comes with the NO!!

It’s hard early on in our career to know that we can say no. But like you, I had a lot of sleepless nights over a couple of clients that hurt my health because just worked so hard and it was like beating my head up against the wall. Today, I know better and I have given myself permission to say no

It takes experience (and a few hard lessons) to realize we don’t have to say yes to everything or everyone!

Hi Marney,
I think this is especially hard for new agents who want desperately to grow their client base. We have all learned (eventually) that not everyone is a good fit.

Expert guidance. Exceptional results.

Thanks for sharing such honest insights, Marney Kirk. I love how you highlight the power of saying "no" and recognizing when a client isn’t the right fit—so true! I really appreciate you taking the time to reflect and share your lessons learned; it’s a great reminder for all of us. 😊

Hi Marney- I think that many agents, stagers, etc are hesitant to say "no" when they begin. And once you learn that it's ok to say NO...life gets better.

So true that many agents do not recognize or wait too long to release  "toxic" clients

You make a great point!  We are definitely at an advantage when looking back upon what could have been done better, especially since the tools of today are different than the tools of yesteryear, haha.

Great observation Marney. Some folks are just too big hearted to say NO. Generally though it is a good character feature. Just say NO can backfire as well.

A good entry for the Challenge, Marney Kirk  and the key, as you note is to be able to identify and pick the clients that will work best for you.

Desperation can lead us to make choices we may regret. When we need business, we sometimes take on a client with whom we do not have a truly good fit. We need to recognize the error and make an adjustment before things get even worse.

Marney, early in my real estate career I had a lead from the internet that somebody referred to me - working with these clients and especially, with the father, was exhausting. After that experience, I reflected deeply about the type of people I will work.

Marney Kirk - I think many agents would agree with you. It's hard to get started and we don't know what we got until we start working with a client. Buyers are very emotional and soon we begin to see the change in personality. Letting people go is hard to do when we already invested a lot of time and our money on their behalf.
