This Week…Celebrating WORDS

When I learned that today is Wordsmith Day, I couldn’t help but think of our friend and master of wordsmithery… Michael Jacobs

“This day recognizes the importance of words and the skill of those who use them effectively.”

Be mindful when it comes to your words. A string of some that don’t mean much to you may stick with someone else for a lifetime. Rachel Wolchin

We use words daily, and like people, some are good and some..not so much.  In writing our posts, we’re torn between choosing words our readers will understand and trying to up our game by using words we enjoy using.

Words are free. It’s how you use them that may cost you.
KushandWizdom

Where people may forgive a transgression, words are often less forgiving. My high school principal was always reminding us that…

A word said is a word dead.

Raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder.
Rumi

Our words can offer comfort to someone in need…but they also have the power to cut someone off at the knees. They can inspire others to dream big or dishearten anyone looking for hope.

My task, which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel–it is, before all, to make you see.
Joseph Conrad

Did you know that the average person has a vocabulary of between 20,000 and 35,000 words???

Only 5% of the words people use during the day are unique words.

Have fun using your words this weekend!

Good morning, Kathy. Words are just so powerful. Your quotes totally made this clear. Couldn't have said this better myself:

"Our words can offer comfort to someone in need…but they also have the power to cut someone off at the knees. They can inspire others to dream big or dishearten anyone looking for hope."

Thank you Nina Hollander, Broker we may not realize it but our words can be like weapons!  And, like any weapon, we have to take care in how we use them.

Words are indeed so important. A harsh word(s) can stay with someone for a lifetime. So kindness in words should be a must!

Kat Palmiotti It's interesting that you can't touch a word. You see it and hear it but can't touch it. And yet...they can heard more than a knife cut.

Hello Kathy - thank you for the mention as well as letting me know of yet another day of celebration that I was clueless about until now.  As far as my own wordsmithery, I have long admired words of wisdom attributed to others like you have shared today.  My mind has many thoughts but categorizing them can sometimes lead to confusion.  Darn clutter-control!

Michael Jacobs when I saw the day...you popped into my mind. I love learning new words or the real meaning for words I only mildly know.

Choose your words wisely said a professor of mine while I was working on a Communications degree.  I learned so much from that man.   And sometimes it's better to say nothing.

On a silly note......I'm smiling thinking of a woman who uses ridiculous 'word salads' and  every time I hear her do this, it's like,......please make her stop!  Maybe some day she will just that!!  There is always hope!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten Voltaire said "One great use of words is to hide our thoughts.'

I marvel at those who can speak and actually say something meaningful.

Kathy there is a saying:

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."

How ever the truth is that even though words can't break bones, they can be far more hurtful than sticks and stones.

Hi Kathy,
You know I love words. I wish more people would use the power of words more responsibly.  You know what I mean.

My Grammarly Insights report tells me how many unique words I use weekly. I run between 4,000 and 5,000 unique words a week. I'm not sure what qualifies as a unique word, but it is always 90% or more than other users. I find that surprising because I don't feel like I have a particularly large vocabulary.
