The pope is a White Sox Fan!

It's truly been an interesting week in the world, and definitely in Chicago.  We learned with a puff of smoke that the world had a new Pope, and not only that, but for the very first time he is from the United States.

He is not, as is being widely reported, the first American, as Francis was from Argentina (which is also American... south American to be precise).  I know, I know... we from the U.S. like to call our selves Americans, but we aren't the only inhabitants of America.

But those of us in the greater Chicagoland area learned that Pope Leo XIV is also from our area.  He's not technically from Chicago, he's from a nearby suburb (Naperville), but as many in our area who are from nearby, we claim Chicago as our hometown.

And better yet, we learned that The Pope, when he was young, actually was a fan of our own White Sox! Woo Hoo!!  We've got the inside track! Angels in the infield?

Exciting times, no?

Now this brings a reality to Angels in the outfield unless one considers maybe he sat in the bleachers.

Good afternoon Alan,

Its been quite week with the news...a puff of smoke and the new Pope was revealed! Good news to know he was from Chicago (just outside) but I had not heard when he was younger he was a White Sox fan! I'm more and more will be unearthed!

Thanks for sharing this fun and uplifting piece, Alan May! It’s always great to hear about a pope with local roots and a love for the White Sox—definitely a good reason to cheer! Appreciate you bringing some hometown pride and a smile to our day! ⚾😊

They've been interviewing his brother on the local news, all day.  And it's funny to hear him referring to him as "father Bob".

Hi Alan- even though I'm not Catholic, I watched the new Pope emerge from behind the curtains. His Italian was remarkable. You call Naperville Chicago just as when I say Houston, I'm actually in Cypress.

I think much of the non-Catholic world watched the election of the new pope with fascination.

Alan May - when I heard on the news a day or two ago that he was a White Sox Fan I think I really did hear screams of joy from Chicago all the way in Texas.

FYI, the day before I moved to Texas I went to a White Sox Game for one last time.

The Cubbies are trying to lay claim to him, as well, since his mother was a north-sider.

Alan May - The Cubbies trying to claim him too is pretty funny! I can understand because I was always a fan of whichever team was winning!
