🌅 5 Places to Catch a Sunset This Spring in Oconee County

One of the best parts about living in the Western Upstate of South Carolina? We don’t need to go far to find a view worth stopping for. Spring is the perfect time to slow down and take in a sunset — and if you're wondering where to go, here are five of my favorite places to watch the day wind down.

1. South Cove County Park – Lake Keowee

Set right on Lake Keowee, this park offers gentle waves, quiet picnic spots, and beautiful west-facing views. The sunsets here reflect off the water like a mirror — perfect for a peaceful evening.

2. Sassafras Mountain Tower

The highest point in South Carolina offers 360° views — and yes, the sunsets up there can be absolutely jaw-dropping. Bring a light jacket and someone to share the moment with.

3. Jumping Off Rock – Lake Jocassee Overlook

Remote, wild, and breathtaking. If you’re up for the drive (and the gravel road), this is one of the most iconic views in the Southeast. Sunset here feels like stepping into a painting.

4. Chau Ram County Park

Catch the sunset from the bridge or down by the water. It’s a local favorite for photographers — and you’ll see why when the light hits the river just right.

5. Scenic Hwy 11 Pull-Offs

Sometimes the best views are the unexpected ones. Keep an eye out along Highway 11 — you’ll find pull-offs with pasture views, mountain silhouettes, and skies that seem to go on forever.

Whether you’re visiting or considering moving, Oconee County offers a front-row seat to some of the best sunsets in the South.

Saturday is almost over.  It is raining all day, so hopefully the forest fires will all go out.

Gwen, these five spots in Oconee County sound perfect for catching beautiful spring sunsets! South Cove County Park's reflective waters and the panoramic views from Sassafras Mountain Tower are particularly appealing. Jumping Off Rock's wild beauty and the river views at Chau Ram County Park also sound lovely. Thanks for sharing these gems!

Yes, I love living in the corner of the world where trees outnumber the people.  See you at the end of the pavement.

Hello Gwen - nature continues to create one-of-a-kind moments.  Although similar in many ways, sunsets remain unique.  It's magical without any sleight of hand movement.

Sunsets calm me. When I have finished dinner and I am sitting on the patio watching the birds, they change, as does the light. Sunset sends us all to bed. Have a great weekend.

I think you have to be of a certain age to enjoy sunsets like I do.  Lately, we have not had many; we are in thunderstorm season.  Just having rain, rain, and more rain.  Tis another season to understand and love.
