Take me out to the ballpark! Fenway to be exact!

I had a client/friend whose daughter was graduating this past weekend from North Eastern in Boston and Annie and I decided to go a day early and take in a game at Fenway.

Whilst the idea was a good one from the inception, how it played out was more dramatic. My client had booked our rooms originally back in December, so we had to add a room to the booking which proved to be difficult. So we booked a room back in March for one night at the same hotel to go to Fenway, being a dog friendly hotel, The Freepoint in Cambridge, a Hilton Hotel it would allow us to leave Jackie in the room when we went to the game.

However, drama was to ensue. Annie spoke to the hotel at four o'clock the night before we were to arrive and explained the situation and they confirmed we could stay in the same room, we just had to check out and check back in the next morning. Great!

Then at nine thirty the same evening, they cancelled our room, we called and spoke with them but they said they were oversold and had no choice as our third party booking site had overbooked and they had cancelled our reservation. We spoke to Booking.com who told us they had not cancelled the room, the hotel had cancelled it. I called Hilton Honors and they called the hotel, but they could do nothing other than confirm it was the hotel who had cancelled the reservation. I have since read this is a common occurrence when hotels have sold the room for a higher price.

We had several hours of angst as we thought we might have to miss the game, and lose our money on the tickets, until I had the idea to see when my client was arriving. So we booked a room at another hotel on the outskirts of Boston. She got in at 1.00, our game was 1.30, so we met her at the Amtrak Station, she was a little delayed about 15 minutes, she then took my car and Jackie and we took an Uber to the game. After the game we Ubered to the hotel and checked in, having stayed elsewhere the night before.

Fenway, The Big Green Wall

The game was awesome, this is a very unusual ballpark with the big green wall, and we were lucky enough to see a home run scored over the big green wall and a win for the Boston Red Sox. The weather was fabulous, we enjoyed the game, the atmosphere and the afternoon was a great hit.

We then arrived to check in, checking us in was the woman who had cancelled our reservation. She tried to tell me they had no choice. I stopped her and said there is always a choice. That Hilton Honors had told me they could see it was the hotel who had cancelled the reservation, not Booking.com. I think she realized how they had messed up all our plans, so they upgraded our room, gave us free parking and did not charge us for having Jackie with us.

Overall, other than the angst for three hours when the booking was cancelled it was a fabulous weekend, good friends, good food, fun times and seeing our friend's daughter graduate, a moment to remember and celebrate.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX very true, we actually ended up staying at another Hilton chain hotel outside of Boston, which had free parking, did not charge us for Jackie and was also $100 less a night.

Michael Jacobs arriving at the ballpark we both sighed and relaxed for the first time for a day or so. The game was very entertaining and enjoyable.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 oh yes a great weekend supporting a client who has her own challenges right now.

Sham Reddy CRS not our team, but a fun game, and seeing the home run was the cherry on top.

Nina Hollander, Broker I actually read a story about Hilton doing this to a Diamond tier member who had booked Superbowl rooms at a fantastic rate and the hotel cancelled saying there was no way they would have sold rooms at that rate during Superbowl. Then offered him the rooms at 4 times the rate he had bought them. It seems hotels will cancel if they can sell the room for more, so having a confirmed reservation means nothing.

Wayne Martin there was no point getting worked up, it usually gets you nothing, being calm got us a lot more, I just wanted to make the point they had a choice even when they said they didn't.

Kat Palmiotti having a confirmed reservation means nothing anymore. We just had to find an alternative solution.

Roy Kelley that is very true.

Such a terrible hotel experience for you and I hope that they will do something to try and make up for it.  A day at the ballpark is always nice!  A game at Fenway Park is definitely on my bucket list.

Brian England it all ended up being fine and this was my first visit to Fenway, great experience. We visit Pittsburgh in June for a game between the Phillies and the Pirates.

George Souto they were playing the Texas Rangers, so maybe that helps. It was a very good game.

Well I'm glad your plan B worked out Nick!  And I so agree, staying calm and handling it in a smooth manner typically will work out better at least for yourself!  And there is always a choice.......making the 'right' choice is the key.

Glad you guys had fun at the game!

Hi Nick- you and Annie have an abundance of patience!  What a mess but at least it turned out well.  Traveling isn't as much fun anymore because of things like what you experienced.  What a shame that some businesses make it difficult for the public to trust what they say.

That said...our favorite 3rd baseman, Alex Bregman, is now with Boston.

Will Hamm it was a fantastic stadium and we had great seats as well.

Lew Corcoran I really could have done without the angst though.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten not sure who made the decision to cancel, but when we checked in they were very willing to help and make things right.

Kathy Streib yes, I think he was playing, I am sure you are missing him.

OH MY Nick, what a cluster!    I haven't had a hotel cancel on me, but I always book directly with the hotel.   Have heard horror stories about 3rd party sites.

Joan Cox this was entirely the hotel, Booking.com told us they gave no reason for the cancellation and they offered us another hotel nearby covering up to $350, but we chose a hotel further away which was less money. Hilton Honors also told me it was the hotel who had cancelled the reservation. It all worked out in the end so all is good.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543   a lot of drama. That park is ideal for a game unless your behind one of the stanchions.  As A kid in the id 50's we went to our first live game at Fenway. Some player named Williams was still in the outfield.

Ed Silva, 203-206-0754 I had bought some really good tickets so we did not have to deal with any stanchions, more getting hit by foul balls.

Mike Colpitts I loved the ballpark, it is so different to our park in Philadelphia. Both are great, just different.

I also wanted to mention that Fenway South where the Redsox do their spring training is here in Fort Myers and we love taking in their games. We saw 2 games this spring training season! It was fantastic!

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 - I traveled once to Boston with friends, and we ended up at Fenway Park. I was in awe! Although I didn't get to see the game, it was such a crowded but fun experience. I guess you never know what can transpire between the time you make reservations and what happens in between. That must have been stressful for you, Annie, and your dog. Drama is not pleasant, but you were able to get through the hurdles. I especially liked what you said when you "stopped her and said there is always a choice." Sometimes people forget, the Customer is always right! You handled that well and you were upgraded with no charge for your pet. I'm glad you got to see the game and that it all worked out!

Patricia Feager it ended up being a fun weekend, other than for the weather, but during the game it could not have been better.
