F.I.M.D. (foot in mouth disease) makes its way into every business and personal transaction. It runs rampant and random too. This is something that we have inherited, and apparently, there is no cure. Its symptoms are very obvious only after the fact, never before. Consequently, the ones infected become embarrassed and even humiliated, swearing never to travel that way again, but to no avail. The "foot" steps on
FOOT IN MOUTH DEFINED: To say something without intending to, that is embarrassing, lacks tact & is insensitive to your current audience. Social blundering, a type of misspeak that offends.
foot food?
NO ESCAPE AND NO CURE
For try as we may, f.i.m.d. follows us around like a newborn chick follows the mother hen. We are aware of it, but powerless to stop it. Some have it worse than others, but all show symptoms. The only short-term remedy is to discipline yourself and try to bring your thinking & emotions under control. Easier said than done when HOT issue buttons are launched & someone pushes yours.
STARTS OUT INNOCENT ENOUGH
Work or play, intimate or friendly, a situation gets our attention & the next thing we know is instead of observing or questioning, we decide to join or interact, sort of what busy bodies do. The famous, but not talked about kicks-in. FAUX PAS
FAUX PAS DEFINED: An embarrassing or tactless act or remark in a gathering takes place. THINK: Bee sting, only this is a more personal type of pain
PHEASANT UNDER GLASS or CROW ALFREDO?
If you must say or do something that may or may not travel toward your mouth, make it for the right reasons & it will be easier to live with. It may cause a stir, but won't activate your conscience. Fail this, & eating "crow" is on the menu
EATING CROW DEFINED: An admittance that you are wrong, followed by an apology for causing embarrassment or humiliating circumstances
BREAKTHROUGHS REPORTED
There has been some breakthrough in bringing this into submission. In involves, however constant exposure to the problem until one is able to rein it in and subdue it in the moment temporarily at least. The problem lies when one has something at stake of considerably value or one is bored or when errors come pouring forth. Perfect breeding ground for F.I.M.D. (foot in mouth disease)
POLITICIANS SUFFER BADLY
Politicians have this disease and, because it is in the advanced stages, accept it and revel in it. Their approach is to simply say: Hi my name is blank (fill in name) & I have foot in mouth disease. Then the public all respond: HI blank (literally appropriate) & we all move on to the singing portion of the gathering. Special denial genes are at work. We keep voting for them too?
ANOTHER CRAZY DYNAMIC
In our personal & professional lives, where we do or don't play a part correctly, a strange "undoing" takes place by us i.e. any good work we have done, real or otherwise, we tend to "FIX" what isn't broken making something worse by our own hand, that was just fine. A type of "reverse living", a backwards momentum making those around us wonder: is this who they really are? Why did they do that? If we just left it alone, no problem. Now, damage control is necessary! Whoa
WORTHY NOTE: It has been stated correctly & profoundly, "the enemy has been sighted & it is us". Fail this truth, blame, excuses & storytelling are now yours
IT MOVES IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS
Ladies and gentlemen, try as you may, somehow, some way & seemingly under its own power, YOUR FOOT will find its way to YOUR MOUTH. It's worse when wearing shoes too as high heels have been reported to have very damaging affects. The only advice given by survivors and help groups is to resist the urge, stand, hold, & do not give in. Keep your "foot" on the ground! LOL
WHY REGRET? WHY SUFFER?
Recovery is subjective. It can also come in waves, or all at once, or a combo. You wish you had never did or said that. Take heart. Life goes on. You get to go again, hopefully wiser for it
The foot & crow will pass looking for the next poor fellow's mouth to occupy
