This Week…Summer is Pushing Out Spring

When I looked at my weather app Friday morning, I did a double-take. It was 6 am and already 78 degrees.

A great many people think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices.
William James

Everyone at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve has started walking earlier to beat the heat. If you're just starting your walk at 8 a.m. it's too late.

Larry placed an umbrella over the bluebird box to keep some heat out.

Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason why so few engage in it.
Benjamin Franklin

Here are the 5 chicks inside the box waiting for mom or dad to bring something to eat.

Be a free thinker and don't accept everything you hear as truth. Be critical and evaluate what you believe in.
Aristotle

Larry and I have observed mothers and young children at the parks on weekdays. At first, we wondered why they weren’t in school until it dawned on us that these parents were homeschooling their children.

No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking.
Voltaire

I understand why many parents choose this route.  They want their children to develop the ability to think on their own…to be curious about the world…to learn how to read, write, and do basic math.

Have a great weekend!

Good morning, Kathy. Love the picture of those little baby birds and the umbrella idea was brilliant. Homeschooling, by the way, is the fastest growing form of education in the US today.

Nina Hollander, Broker it wasn't until several years ago when a friend began homeschooling her children that we realized how organized it is.

Good morning Kathy. Spring is still teasing us here in the Chicago area. Yesterday in the 80's, today a high of 66, tomorrow a high of 71, then the rest of the week in the 50's. Oh summer when will you come? We are trying to be patient. Enjoy your day.

Wayne Martin You would probably prefer your weather to ours today. It is overcast and muggy and 90 degrees now.

Michael Jacobs since the dawn of time or should I say weather. On our morning walks, many comment on the weather.

Excellent photos and quotes! I wouldn't have had the patience and discipline required to be a good in-home teacher for my children but I give those who can do that lots of credit!

Kat Palmiotti I agree. I've seen many parents who are with young children during the week at the park. They are very tuned in to their children.

Kathy, I loved your post. The photos of the baby chicks and the one with the umbrella over the bluebird box, and Benjamin Franklin's quote all fantastic.  Have a wonderful weekend.

Thank you Joe Mojica You are so kind!  We are waiting for the birds in our box to fledge and another brood of 5 eggs about to hatch.

When I lived in NY, summer was my favorite time of year. Finally the warm temps and sunny days would be welcome. Now, summer is my least favorite time. I love the long days, but not the constant 90 degree temps.

Love seeing your pictures of the baby birds!  So sweet!  It's Dove mating season here and OMG it's been noisy!  Busy birds flying back and forth and chasing each other.  And BTW our grandkids have been home schooled since 2020. At first it was because schools were shut down and then it was because they wanted them to be taught critical thinking and not all the hogwash they discovered was being taught. Kids are all doing fantastic and involved with lots of other activities and sports too.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten What I like is that accomodations are made for children who are homeschooled so they feel they've missed out on anything.

Good afternoon Kathy,

I love the photo of the baby birds! What an ingenious idea Larry had to cover them with an umbrella! Homeschooling, is the fastest growing form of education in the US today, especially after our public education system veered off the path of teaching kids the basic skills and catered to the special interest groups.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX Larry may set up a mister system for the birds here. Our children are graduating without knowing the basics.  That fault becomes our fault.

Hi Kathy:

What a clever, and hopefully helpful, solution to heat control for the bluebird family. Sounds like summer has arrived already in Houston.

I certainly prefer the heat to it being chilly, so I say bring it on, haha.  I like being able to go outside in the mornings without a jacket on!
