Every year I circle this event on my calendar and never miss it, “The PT50 Thinkers & Doers Symposium!” It’s become a fun annual tradition to attend with my son and daughter, we always look forward to learning about the latest developments shaping our beloved city of Austin.
Austin PT50 always brings the energy, the insight, and a stellar lineup of Visionary Leaders who are deeply invested in our one-of-a-kind Austin community. This year’s focus? Three game-changing projects that are shaping the future of how we live, work, and connect in our city.
♦First up: “Unconventional ATX” – the New Austin Convention Center
Kathy Zamesnik, Assistant Director of the Convention Center, walked us through the exciting transformation happening downtown. Out with the old, in with a bolder, greener, and more connected space that integrates beautifully with Waterloo Greenway and the Great Springs Project. Think: sustainable design, walkable districts, and cultural vibrancy woven together.
Fun fact: Austin is the 11th largest city in the U.S., but our current convention center ranks 61st in size. Not for long! With a $1.6 billion investment, we’re shooting for 35th place and beyond.
♦ Next: Garry Merritt and the Great Springs Project
This guy always leaves me inspired. Garry’s leading the charge through his non-profit to connect Austin to San Antonio via a greenbelt of protected land and spring-to-spring trails, all over the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone. His passion is infectious, and his mission is clear: leave the earth better than you found it. And he’s doing just that, one trail and spring at a time.
♦ Last but not least: Waterloo Greenway’s Next Chapter
John Rigdon from the Planning and Design Office shared the latest updates on Waterloo Greenway, aka Austin’s Park for All. Phase 2 is already underway and will open in May 2026. If you’ve enjoyed a concert at the Moody Amphitheater or experienced the jaw-dropping holiday light shows like I have, you know just how magical this space is. Phase 2 promises even more ways to gather, celebrate, and soak in the beauty of downtown Austin.
What struck me most? The level of collaboration, intention, and brilliance these leaders bring to the table. Austin’s transformation isn’t random, it’s a master-planned evolution, designed with heart, smarts, and soul.
