Summer Is (Unofficially) Here — And It’s Sizzling For Your Pets, Too!

Hot Tips For Cool Pets: Summer Safety Tips From Charlotte's Pet-Friendly Real Estate Agent

While summer hasn’t officially kicked off on the calendar, it’s already making its presence known in Charlotte and in cities across the country. And we're just one week away from Memorial Day weekend, which many consider the official start of the summer season. The rising temperatures, long sunny days, and sweltering afternoons are reminders that the summer season has effectively arrived. And while we humans can crank up the A/C or seek shade when it gets too hot, our pets aren't always so lucky.

If you’re feeling the heat, just imagine how it feels for your furry companions — especially those covered in thick coats of fur. The truth is, pets are particularly vulnerable during the summer months. In fact, more pets are at risk of heat-related injuries and illnesses in summer than during any other time of the year.

How Hot🔥  Is Too Hot🔥 for Your Pet? Try the 5-Second Test

One simple way to check if it’s safe for your pet to be outdoors, especially for walks on pavement or asphalt, is the 5-second test: Place your hand on the ground and hold it there for five seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s definitely too hot for your pet’s paws. Surfaces like sidewalks and streets can become dangerously hot, leading to painful burns or discomfort for your pet.

ASPCA's infographic below points out the 5 Summer Dangers For Pets, which include sun and heat, fireworks and thunderstorms, hot cars, toxic chemicals, and parties and barbecues. Following the safety tips outlined in this infographic will ensure that your pets enjoy a pawsitively great summer.

Why You Should NEVER Leave Your Pet In A Hot 🔥Car 🚗

Every summer we hear reports on the news about pets that have perished in a hot car or were rescued from a hot car. Did you know that hundreds of pets die each year from being left in a hot car or from heat exhaustion?

A car heats up very quickly in the summer heat... don't take chances with your pet by leaving it in the car for even a couple of minutes. If it's  90 degrees outside, your car heats up to 114 degrees within 10 minutes and to 129 degrees within 30 minutes. Cracking your window open will not help keep the car cool enough for your pet.

How Hot Does Your Car Get In Summer

7 More Tips For Caring For Your Pet During Hot Summer Weather

  1. Be sure to have plenty of water available for both your dogs and cats when it's hot as they can get dehydrated much more quickly. Be sure to carry water with you when out with your dog.

  2. Don't leave pets unsupervised around your pool. If your dog swims in your pool, hose it off to remove chlorine and chemicals as soon as possible.

  3. Keep pets off of hot pavement and asphalt as much as possible to keep their pads from burning.

  4. Keep your pets protected against mosquito bites by not skipping on heartworm medicine in the summer months.

  5. Don't shave your longer haired dogs thinking it will cool them off... it might instead cause them to be sunburned.

  6. If you keep windows open in your home, be sure to install screens securely so that dogs and cats don't fall out.

  7. Know the signs of heat stroke in dogs and cats.

Staying aware of these dangers to our fur babies will keep the coming summer season a happy one for both pets and their parents.

Good morning Nina. Safety for pets was a big issue for us when we had our rescue Yorkie. He was a lion in a tiny body except when fireworks or thunderstorms were involved. We had a pool and he would run around it and bark at the squirrel teasing him from above on the screen enclosure. Go for a swim, never. He was not a water lover. Walks in hot weather when the sun was out were limited to the lawn on the shaded side of the house. He let us know what he wanted and we obliged. Great tips. Enjoy your day.

Nina, thanks for the helpful paw tips! I didn't know about the 5 second rule but it makes sense. We try to take our dogs out early in the morning and later in the evening in our area as the middle of the day is just too hot!

Matthew Klinowski, PA hi Matt... I'm always a bit astounded when I see people walking their dogs on concrete in the middle of the day when it's 90 degrees.

Yes Nina, Let's make sure all pets stay safe this summer by keeping them hydrated, avoiding hot pavement, and never leaving them in a parked car!

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 hi Sheila... that business of leaving dogs and kids in a car while the driver is doing something else boggles the mind. Here, they recently took custody of three kids who were left in a car while their mother went to exercise in the gym.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty hi Jeff... I had a next-door neighbor who did this to her dog. When another neighbor went over and suggested it was too hot for the dog to be outside all day, she slammed the door in that neighbor's face. I never spoke to that neighbor again and was happy when they moved.

Good morning Nina,

Great post because summer has come early to Austin and I always cringe at what I see when it comes to caring for pets. It's like some pet owners have no clue!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX thanks, Dorie... we've also had some 85+ degree days already. It's certainly not going to get cooler in the weeks ahead.

Nina - My yard is large enough for my dog. I run and play with her in the backyard. I make sure that I give her monthly heartworm medication. She always has plenty of water.  I get so upset when I see dog owners or pet sitters walking dogs in the middle of a day when it is above 90 degrees. I loved the tips you posted. Thanks for sharing.

Joe Mojica thanks, Joe. My Bingo actually likes to sit in the sun a bit when it's hot... somehow he always knows when he's had enough. He goes to our private dog park daily, which is grassed and doesn't mind running around and playing with his doggie friends even when it's hot.

Hi Nina- what a good reminder!  If it's too hot for your feet then it's too hot for our dogs!  When you're out walking your pets, please take water for them. I'm grateful our parks have water fountains to accommodate humans and dogs!

Nina, your summer pet safety tips are so important, especially with the early heat this year! The 5-second rule for pavement is a great, simple way to protect paws. Reminding people about the dangers of hot cars and the need for constant hydration is crucial for our furry friends' well-being during these sizzling months.

Dennis Neal hi Dennis... all of this seems logical and sensible... and yet, we have stories all summer long of pets being found in hot cars.

Nina it's so important to get this information out to pet owners.  We are very careful with our fur babies- very.  A few years back when Barney (my sweet assistant) was still alive at age 18 he walked right into the pool - which he never had before (except when we trained him how to get out of it if need be).  He stayed far away.  Thankfully Gary was out there and saw him in the pool and got him out as he was now blind.  That very afternoon,, Gary went to Home Depot and bought everything we need to install a temporary fence to keep Barney on half the yard.....no pool!  It stayed there until he died and worked out great.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten oh goodness, Anna... that must have been so scary and fortunately Gary was there to save poor little Barney. I've always been very careful with my own fur babies -- dogs and cats. But I see so many people who aren't and I'd like to throttle them.

Anna "Banana" Kruchten hi Anna... the words I have for people like that can't be used in polite company. We used to see version of this in the Hamptons on Long Island. People would rent homes for the summer and acquire a dog or cat. At end of summer when the lease was over and they returned to the city, they would let those animals loose.

May 20, 2025 12:50 PM
Anna "Banana" Kruchten

Nina Hollander, Broker recently I've heard of a few people leaving the dogs in the yard....and they moved.  How in the world somebody could do that is beyond me.  Thankfully they all got rescued by neighbors.

Patricia Feager we have raccoons show up in our backyard from time to time.  A few weeks ago there was a Momma and 3 babies.  The babies knew how to get into the pool and stay safe on the top step.  But once Norman saw them....boy she got them out of there fast and went back up into the mountains!

May 20, 2025 12:34 PM
Patricia Feager

Anna "Banana" Kruchten in Illinois I had a pool. On the night I came home from my summer job in Maine I heard what sounded like a baby crying (or mother screaming). I discovered a family of racoons were prowling around and a baby fell into the pool. Lucky for me, I called my neighbor, and he got the baby out with no trouble from the mother. She just swatted her baby into the woods, and I never had that problem again.

Gary did the right thing to go to Home Depot and build a temporary fence around the pool.
