Tornado Safety

Last night, massive storms broke out all over North Texas and many other states. Granbury is located about 30 miles southwest of Fort Worth. The featured picture was taken by a Granbury resident as this monster tornado cut through the northern part of our area. It was a beast to behold.

When the tornado sirens go off, people need to pay attention. This has been a rough Spring with many strong storms. Some of our neighboring towns to the north experienced a direct hit. Our prayers are with them.

But, we are in Tornado Alley so it is wise to respect the power of these storms and to stay prepared. Many new people have moved to our area who have yet to experience these scary storms.

🌪 Determine where the safest place in your home may be. Sometimes it is a closet with no windows. However, most of our tornadoes come from the west so be wary of the location of the closet and choose one that is not on the western wall.  Another common space is under stairs or in a bathtub if there is not another good place to escape.

🌪 Stay away from windows. As tempting as it is to watch these storms come in, they can surprise you with their speed and before you know it, you are in the middle of a nasty situation.

🌪 Consider purchasing or building a storm shelter. The investment may save you, your family, and your pet's lives. Home Depot and Lowes have storm shelters that can be installed in your garage.

🌪 In your safe area, keep some necessary items on hand. Water, first aid kit, blankets, radio, flashlight, non-perishable food, and any other items you might need.

🌪 Practice your safety plan with your family. Make sure everyone knows where to go and what to do when the weather turns deadly. We always ask our 13-year-old to verbally repeat the plan to us so we know he understands exactly what to do.

🌪 Check on your neighbors. Make sure your neighbors know what's coming. Some people may have already gone to bed or have the TV off. Staying in contact is a good idea.

🌪 Consider purchasing a weather radio. If the power goes out, these devices can provide needed information.

We are thankful this monster tornado skirted our town. We were not so fortunate in 2013 when Granbury was directly hit and experienced dozens of homes lost and many lives lost. The storm hit at dusk and the recovery phase was difficult because it was night.

Whether the sirens go off or not, impending weather should be taken seriously. Stay vigilant, be prepared, and stay safe.

Good morning, Paula... this is excellent advice. Our daughter who lives in St. Louis, has been without power for days after the tornadoes ripped through that city.

Dr. Paula McDonald tornados are rare here in CT, especially in my town.  I am glad we don't have to deal with them, but this is great information to have JUST IN CASE.

You all are lucky, George. I've lived in both north and south Texas. South Texas brought the hurricanes and North Texas, the tornadoes. I've experienced both. Whew!

Good evening Paula,

Good advice! Stay vigilant, be prepared, and stay safe! I'm so glad you were not impacted. I talked to a new client who lives in McKinny TX and she spent 5 hours in their bathroom in the center of the house (there go to place) last night during the storm. Thank goodness they weathered the storm too.

Hi Paula- glad you're ok. I saw the bad weather up north. Glad you're ok. I realized this weekend that it's been a year since we had the derecho that had us without power for 4 days.

We have a designated closet with chairs, water, a flashlight etc in it. I also grab my purse and larry's wallet, as well as our devices.

Wow, that sounds really scary, and I have only seen such a thing in movies.  I hope that I will never have to witness a tornado close to me, haha.

Hello Dr. Paula McDonald - that photo is something else.

"Many new people have moved to our area who have yet to experience these scary storms."  HOLY 💩 - makes earthquakes feel more desirable - other than the fact that its CA 🙄

Paula excellent advice. Growing up in MN we did have tornado's and it was very scary.  In fact my Aunt and Uncle had just built a brand new lake home and within a month or so of moving in a tornado hit and destroyed their home - almost completely.  It was a mess.  I'll never forget going out there to see how we could help.  But there wasn't much we could do.  Thankfully we have never experienced tornado's here in PHX....we do have pretty intense monsoon storms but they're nothing compared to tornado's.

Wow that's quite the photo. And good tips for those in danger of tornados. I might keep some tools in the safe area too like a crowbar or hammer just in case things are blocking the exit after the storm.

Outstanding advice including securing all personal paperwork such as wills, banking accounts, etc. So glad we moved away from NW IN where sirens went off each spring. NW AZ where we live has dust storms, no tornadoes and no hurricanes

We do not get a lot of these storms in our state, yet I do remember a few that left a lot of destruction behind.

That photo is frightening indeed just to look at - I can't imagine seeing it in real time in real life.  We are seeing weather patterns change so much over the last few years.  We need to be prepared for lots of weather impacts
