"Rescued is my favorite breed."

Every year on May 20, National Rescue Dog Day shines a light on the thousands of incredible dogs in shelters across the country, all hoping for a second chance at a loving, permanent home. National Rescue Dog Day is a reminder of the thousands of incredible dogs in shelters across the country waiting for a second chance at life, love, and a place to call home.
“You can’t buy love, but you can rescue it.”

If you've ever adopted a shelter/rescue dog, you already know these dogs understand to their core what it means to be rescued and to get a second lease on life. My experience has been that rescue dogs become the most loyal, people-pleasing dogs due to their eternal gratitude. Rescue dogs offer unconditional love and companionship, hoping they’re lucky enough to stay by your side for the rest of their days.
“Everybody should have a shelter dog. It’s good for the soul.”
... Paul Shaffer
National Rescue Dog Day was established in 2018 by Lisa Wiehebrink, a children's book author and the Executive Director of Tails That Teach, a nonprofit dedicated to helping kids understand the importance of compassion and responsible pet care. The inspiration behind this special day? Lisa’s own rescue dog, Cooper. Rescued as a puppy in 2009 from a Los Angeles shelter after being discovered in an abandoned lot, Cooper quickly became the embodiment of resilience and gratitude.
“Looking for a good time? Adopt a shelter dog.”

Four Paws🐾🐾 , Big Hearts❤️: Rescue Dogs Change Lives 🐶 🦴 🐕
Rescue dogs are nothing short of extraordinary. They often come from difficult beginnings, yet their capacity for love, loyalty, and healing is unmatched. Whether curling up at your feet as a devoted family pet, becoming a child’s inseparable friend, or taking on roles as service animals and emotional support companions, rescue dogs prove again and again that they are more than just pets—they’re lifesavers, healers, and heroes.
“Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.”
... Karen Davison
From offering comfort to the elderly to helping individuals with disabilities live more independently, these amazing animals show us that love has no limits. Above all, they are a powerful reminder of the transformative power of second chances—and the unmatched bond between humans and dogs.
“Unconditional love is as close as your nearest shelter.”
