PEELING the ONION-CORN LESSON of LIFE

When you buy fresh corn on the cob, it still has natural, green pod wrappings. It is plucked & packed, shipped out, & at some point arrives in a store near you. Fresh, sweet corn from the earth, like other earth-bearing foods, remains a marvel to eat & in this case, a life lesson too. It started when I reached for an "ear" & found the first leaf that I could pull back, beginning my journey onto the core or final, inner, choice ear center of the corn

THE ONION LAYERS

In my example to come, the onion, (before the corn), went first & became a symbol to humans of the layers of growth & life waiting to be lived, peeled back, & lived again & again, each time deeper & more fulfilling as we approach the choice center. The onion example was first to remind us that being alive was a start & part of that living of life & not just existing with no purpose. Evolving is our given heritage; thus we peel back the layers of life

NOT MY FIRST RODEO

I have peeled many an onion & ear of corn & had a passing thought on the subject matter of this post, but today was my AHA, BINGO & paying a respect to something greater than me, a good thing. The "I get it" comes when it comes

THE CORN

Beautiful, rich green plump of corn held in my hand. I looked for the first wrapped leaf to remove & did so. Then, the silent alert to pay attention came of which I obeyed. Repeated my action to the second & third leaf, all changing colors as I uncovered them one by one. I noticed how the corn was so well protected too

Each leaf gave way to the next, reminding me of when we are born & how our journeys, no two alike, come to unfold, become clearer & maturing us to the purposes of life. The change in texture, colors & the expectation of more to come was inviting & promising. Slowly, one layer exposed to the next until I arrived

Each layer came with its own dynamics, too. In feel, looks, smell & purpose, plus it's giving way when pulled upon. Neatly & handing off to the next, we continue

THE INNER PRIZE

Coming face to face with what was inside this gift wrapping of nature caused pondering. How delicate & deliberate this corn product was. I looked at the row of kernels, neatly arranged & the shape of the corn itself, like a cylinder, made me appreciate how the corn protected itself from unwanted intruders successfully

OUR SIMILAR JOURNEY

Aren't we enfolded from within & without, preserved & protected, until we or others or life itself decides to help us unwrap & advance to the next layer of life? If we follow the natural process & progression, the inner, valuable part comes along nicely & joins us in the journey, upping our personal worth & making things easier

FORCING THIS?

Where humans go wrong or south is our willfulness in the living of the simple life given. We force, manipulate & demand our ways in many instances before our time to do so & to much of our misfortune. We disrupt the now & the future

INNOCENCE HAS A PURPOSE

Once we become savvy, experienced, or matured, well, that's that. If we become these things before our time, we dysfunction, & inherit confusion instead of understanding of what is taking place. Growing up too soon is a type of theft

TREE-RIPENING FRUIT

If you have ever had fruit from the tree, plucked or picked when observed to be ready, via sight, smell, natural knowing & other confirming factors, you are in for a treat & a visit to what life was/is like & had been, if raised on a farm or in wilderness.

Test this! Pick something not ready & you get a rejection of what it is. It's not mature, developed, or finished & our haste terminates the natural processing. We then substitute ripening measures, some good, some not so good, & that is what the markets eventually end up with

WE ARE SIMILAR

Do not get ahead of yourself. All has its timing. Take a moment to reflect, pause & ponder so that your inner can catch up with the outer & become one again called harmony. Turn off thinking, resist traveling in the mind instead of the moment & behold it all, layer by revealing layer

This is a beautifully reflective post, Richard. Your analogy of peeling an onion and corn to illustrate life's layers and natural timing is incredibly insightful. A wonderful reminder to embrace the process and trust the unfolding of life.

Richard Alan Naggar - Growing up in Chicago, fresh corn was always available. It wasn't until I moved to Maine and Texas, that I noticed the corn in states not known to produce corn is harder on my teeth and not as fresh. Shop local where local growers are plentiful.

Your example of the onion is one I use often when teaching someone a lesson or meeting new people. Sometimes you have to keep peeling back the layers to find the real person.
