This Week…Bird Duty

Reading that Sunday is Neighbor Day, I was reminded how blessed Larry and I have been to have had good neighbors wherever we lived.

If you burn your neighbor's house down, it doesn't make your house look any better.
Lou Holtz

Yesterday (Friday), the bluebird chicks began to fledge. It’s what they’re supposed to do…like our children…leave the nest.

Until mom and dad can coax them into the safety of a tall tree, the chicks are at risk from cats, dogs, larger birds, and snakes!  They don’t fledge all at once, either.

Wherever there are birds, there is hope.
Mehmet Murat Ildan

When the birds began to fledge, one went into our neighbor’s backyard. Just as Larry called to give Phyllis a heads-up, she let her dog out. I’m sure her dog was as curious about the visitor as the chick was frightened.

I would like to paint the way a bird sings.
Claude Monet

Thankfully, the dog went back inside!  Mom and Dad bluebird do an admirable job of watching the chicks from high atop a tree or roof.

A neighbor's friendship is a daily reminder that happiness is just a door away.

We’re still waiting (Friday evening) for the two remaining chicks to fledge. More later…

Have a wonderful weekend.

Oh I love that you got a video of the first flight! I'll have to keep my eyes out here for tiny birds...

Good morning Kathy. No two bluebird chicks are alike, so fledging is different for each. Guess mom and dad must sometimes scratch their heads. Enjoy the process.

Hello Kathy - does the occurrence of a bluebird of happiness align with the good neighbor policy.  Be kind and respectful of others and the world around us can appear to be better.  Maybe thoughts and behaviors are more closely connected than some believe.

Loved that little video, Kathy! I know all about dogs chasing yard critters. There was a bunny in my front yard yesterday and when I let Bingo out. Bingo ran at the speed of light after that bunny, which he did not catch. He was very confused as to why.

Nina Hollander, Broker oh how funny!!! Bingo would go nuts out at Kickerillo. The bunnies out there are huge and the dogs go crazy!!!

We just had a nest of Robin babies leave the nest.  They couldn't fly yet but were darn determined to learn how.

Kathy it's so interesting to watch the babies leave the nest......and for some it takes awhile as you know.  One Momma had a nest of birds in our side alcove plant so we had a perfect view of watching the process.  One little guy took forever to get out and when he did he took forever to fly up higher - albeit the parents where trying to get him to do so.  I was relieved when he finally got up on the alcove wall and flew off!  Good Birdie!!

Anna "Banana" Kruchten We're trying to understand why our latest brrods have had some trouble...not every egg hatching, etc. Sadly, there was a bird that fledged yesterday but wouldn't fly . Larry placed it back in the box  last night to protect it.

It did leave the box today but never flew. Mom and dad were around but nothing. It didn't make it. So sad!

Kathy, how fun to watch this natural progression with your bluebirds.   Lucy was out on her leash earlier this week, and wanted to chase the squirrel up the tree.  Good thing I had a good hold on her leash!

Kathy Streib and Larry,

Thank you for being guardians for the bluebirds. I'm sure you never get tired of seeing them fledge. I also love that the mother and father bluebirds know instinctively that your bluebird house is a safe place. When you work in harmony with nature, it is the most beautiful and respectful way for each human and bird to coexist. The video was great too! So are the two of you!

HI Patricia Feager Thank you so much!  I am thankful we're able to observe so many wonderful creatures of God in our yard and our walks. How they take care of their offspring is remarkable.

Kathy Streib - from the time I was a child, I always believed when animals in the wild needed human intervention, someone with a good hear would show up.

Thankfully, you and Larry have good hearts.

Hi Kathy:

Thanks for the bluebird update and for that cute video. Such fun to see that first flight.

The bluebird pair we have been seeing on our feeders have a nest at the neighbors house waay up in a tall palm tree. The young must have recently hatched as the parents have been very busy flying back and forth.

Jeff Dowler, CRS bluebird parents are extremely busy especially when they're trying to keep their juvenile bluebirds fed and feed the baby bluebirds in the box. We observe them going back and forth. I'm worn out!
